In the fourth installment of the Harry Potter series, Lord Voldemort's "most faithful servant" is introduced. Barty Crouch Jr., a fellow Death Eater alongside Bellatrix Lestrange, exhibits extreme cruelty and ruthlessness. He not only subjects the Longbottoms to horrific torture, leaving them permanently incapacitated, but he also forces their traumatized son to witness his heinous acts by performing the same Unforgivable Curse in front of him at a later time.
However, in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, much of Barty Crouch Jr.'s backstory is overlooked, resulting in various ambiguities and unanswered questions. One such question pertains to how he becomes the first individual in almost 300 years to successfully escape the wizarding prison of Azkaban.
Who Is Barty Crouch Jr.?
Bartemius 'Barty' Crouch Jr. is a pure-blood wizard and the son of Barty Crouch Sr., a well-respected figure in the Ministry of Magic. It is likely that Barty attends Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry during the same period as Severus Snape and other Death Eaters due to his age. During the height of the First Wizarding War, he aligns himself with Voldemort's cause. After Voldemort's disappearance, Barty and a group of Death Eaters, in an effort to uncover information about Voldemort's whereabouts, subject the renowned Aurors Frank and Alice Longbottom to prolonged torture using the Cruciatus Curse, resulting in their descent into madness.
At the time of their capture, Barty is just 19 years old. However, despite his age, he is given a harsh sentence by the Council of Magical Law, with his own father, Crouch Sr., leading the trial. Despite Barty's desperate pleas, Crouch Sr., who has dedicated his life to apprehending dark wizards and hopes to become the Minister for Magic, publicly disowns his son. In order to set an example for how Death Eaters should be punished, he ensures that Barty receives a life sentence in Azkaban.
Afterwards, Crouch Sr. finds himself demoted from his position as the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement to the Head of the Department of International Magical Cooperation. This unfortunate event occurs as a result of his son's involvement in a serious crime.
How Does Barty Crouch Jr. Break Out of Azkaban?
In 1982, Barty's mother falls gravely ill because of the immense strain caused by her son's impending doom. In her final moments, she pleads with her husband to save their son, a desperate request he simply cannot refuse. Full of affection for his wife, a love he had never quite felt for their son, Crouch Sr. eventually relents. The couple embarks on a trip to Azkaban, where they employ a cunning plan. Both mother and son consume the transformative Polyjuice Potion, effectively switching their identities. This clever ruse allows them to deceive the sightless Dementors. These beings possess the ability to sense only a solitary dying individual entering the fortress and then, seemingly, departing shortly thereafter.
Barty's mother meets her demise, and her final resting place lies beyond Azkaban, falsely represented as her son. This deception leads the wizarding community to believe that Barty has indeed perished. To elude any suspicions, Crouch Sr. orchestrates his wife's demise through a secluded funeral, where an empty grave stands as a testament to her passing.
Who Is Winky?
Winky, the loyal house-elf of the Crouch family, has been tasked by her master with the responsibility of nursing his son back to health after his return from Azkaban. Despite Crouch Sr.'s use of the Imperius Curse to keep Barty out of trouble, Winky persistently pleads for his son to be acknowledged and rewarded for his good behavior.
Bertha Jonkins, an employee of the Ministry, stumbles upon a shocking truth during a visit to their residence. Overhearing a conversation between Winky and Barty, she confronts Crouch Sr. upon his arrival home. In response, he subjects her to a potent Memory Charm, causing irrevocable damage. Later on, she falls into the clutches of Peter Pettigrew and discloses Voldemort's whereabouts, including intricate details of the forthcoming Triwizard Tournament, before meeting her demise.
Winky, who harbors a nurturing disposition towards Barty, successfully persuades his father to allow him to attend the 1994 Quidditch World Cup. This marks his first departure from their home in a span of twelve years. Despite her fear of heights, Winky fearlessly sits beside Barty, who remains concealed under the Invisibility Cloak, at the stadium. Unbeknownst to her, Barty seizes this opportunity to pilfer the wand belonging to the boy seated in front of them (which is actually Harry), and later employs it to cast the ominous Dark Mark into the sky after the match.
When faced with the aftermath, Crouch Sr. reproaches Winky for her oversight in watching over Barty. Consequently, Winky spirals into a deep depression, resorting to excessive drinking as a means of coping. Despite Dobby's efforts in securing her a position at Hogwarts,
What Happens to Barty Crouch Jr.?
Winky continues to grapple with her despair.Following the Dark Mark incident, Voldemort pays a visit to the Crouch residence with the intention of liberating Barty from his father's curse. However, instead of freeing Barty, Voldemort places Crouch Sr. under the control of the Imperius Curse. As a result, Crouch Sr. is compelled to carry out his usual responsibilities. Remarkably, he even continues to fulfill his duties as one of the judges at the Triwizard Tournament for a while, until circumstances force him to delegate this role to his assistant, Percy Weasley.
Barty, however, receives orders from Voldemort to infiltrate Hogwarts disguised as Alastor Moody, the newly appointed Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. The real Mad-Eye Moody is imprisoned in a magical trunk nearby, and Barty uses his hair to brew the Polyjuice Potion that allows him to maintain his disguise. He manipulates the Goblet of Fire to select Harry's name for the tournament and secretly aids him in all three tasks. Barty also converts the Triwizard Cup into a Portkey, ensuring that when Harry wins, he is transported directly to Voldemort.
Following a clash with Voldemort, Harry manages to return to Hogwarts carrying Cedric Diggory's lifeless body. Against Dumbledore's instructions, Barty takes Harry to his office and interrogates him about Voldemort's revival. Dumbledore grows suspicious and, accompanied by McGonagall and Snape, intervenes, preventing Barty from harming Harry. As the chaos unfolds, Barty forgets to take his potion and reverts to his true identity. Under the influence of Veritaserum, he reveals the entire truth, including the fact that his father had escaped and was en route to disclose everything to Dumbledore. However, Barty received a warning from Voldemort just in time and chose to kill his father, transfigure his body into a bane, and bury it.
After being ordered by Cornelius Fudge, Barty is subjected to the Dementor's Kiss before he can officially confirm that Voldemort has indeed regained power. The Minister for Magic mistakenly believes that Barty has been acting independently and that Voldemort's return is still unfounded. However, the film portrays Barty's destiny differently from the book, implying that he is returned to prison, where he anticipates being hailed as a hero upon his arrival, but is subsequently never brought up again.
