The latest release of the Spy x Family manga was not a full-length chapter, but instead an extra chapter, 90.1. This chapter included a short story and a special colored illustration of Anya. Despite its brevity, there are indications that this chapter may provide insight into Anya's past. Although Anya has been a part of the series since the beginning, very little has been disclosed about her besides her name, age, and abilities. With the upcoming 100th chapter milestone, it appears that creator Tatsuya Endo may be ready to delve into her backstory.

Spy X Family manga chapter 90.1 suggests that Anya is an immigrant
The Spy X Family manga is famed for releasing additional chapters featuring special colored illustrations. Nevertheless, based on a mysterious tweet from manga artist Tatsuya Endo, it appears that the latest chapter holds more significance than previous extra chapters. In the tweet, he hinted that the recent chapter, despite being an extra installment, ties into the main storyline.
Spy X Family chapter 90.1 depicted a flashback to the time when Anya first started at the Eden Academy. She became interested in having a doorplate for her room after seeing one in an anime. Even though her father Loid provided her with a doorplate, it was Anya herself who carved her name on it.

Unexpectedly, rather than carving the letters "A-N-Y-A," Anya mistakenly carved "A-N-I-A." When her father Loid pointed out the error and corrected her, Anya's reaction was unusual; she appeared more intrigued than embarrassed.
As a result, Anya took it upon herself to create a new doorplate with the correct spelling of her name, "ANYA." Later, she was found lying on her bed, deep in thought about her name.

This unusual behavior from Anya, known for her carefree attitude, raised eyebrows among fans. Her unexpected concern over matters related to her name may hint at her immigrant background.
Upon careful analysis of her character, fans only know a few original things about her. Her name is Anya and she is around four or five years old. She obtained telepathic powers accidentally while being experimented on by an organization, from which she fortunately managed to escape. Due to the escalating tensions between Ostania and Westalis at the time, there is reason to believe that Anya is originally from Westalis.

While there is no definitive proof of Anya's Westalis heritage, there are indications suggesting that she may not be originally from Ostania. For one, she expressed a strong certainty regarding the spelling of her name as "A-N-I-A," a spelling that could potentially be common in her country of origin.
Furthermore, she is the sole character in the series with pink hair, a unique trait that may be common in her country.
Nevertheless, regardless of the accuracy of this hypothesis, it is clear that Anya has endured difficult experiences. This is particularly evident in the recent special illustration, which serves as the cover for the extra chapter. In the image, Anya is depicted holding her stuffed toy and gazing toward the main door, surrounded by noticeable dirtiness.

The most significant detail in the photo is the presence of an alcohol bottle behind her, suggesting that one or both of her parents may have struggled with alcoholism. It is possible that they may have even resorted to selling her to researchers in order to support their own potential addictions. This could also explain why Anya became emotional when asked to talk about her mother during an interview at Eden Academy.
That said, these are just theories, and fans may need to wait until the manga reveals the true backstory for Anya Forger.
