Reading suffered a 1-0 defeat in their first third-tier game in 21 years as Ruben Selles made his managerial debut for the Royals against Peterborough.

Ephron Mason-Clark scored just before half-time, leading to a defeat for the home team on the opening day. This loss comes after their relegation from the Championship last season and a six-point deduction due to financial irregularities.

Putting aside the heartbreak of their last-minute defeat in last season's play-off final, Barnsley bounced back by thrashing Port Vale 7-0 at Oakwell. Devante Cole secured a hat-trick on the opening day, with Liam Kitching, Jon Russell, and Andrew Dallas also finding the net. Additionally, an own-goal from defender Dan Jones added to Vale's miserable start.

Blackpool had a successful start in League One following their relegation, emerging as 2-0 winners against Burton at Bloomfield Road, courtesy of a double by Shayne Lavery.

Meanwhile, Wigan began their journey in League One with a 2-1 triumph over Derby, as striker Charlie Wyke scored both goals for the Latics.

In a match that followed their promotion from League Two, Leyton Orient suffered a 1-0 defeat to Charlton due to a goal scored by George Dobson just before half-time. Meanwhile, Stevenage emerged victorious with a 1-0 win over Northampton, as both teams had also been promoted. Exeter quickly took a two-goal lead within four minutes and ultimately secured a 3-0 victory against Wycombe in their away game. Bolton dominated their home game against Lincoln with a comprehensive 3-0 win, while Cambridge emerged as 2-0 winners in their match against Oxford.

Shrewsbury defeated Cheltenham 1-0 at the New Meadow as Bristol Rovers' visit to Portsmouth and Carlisle's game at home to Fleetwood finished 1-1.
