Summary
Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, has become the highest-grossing movie of the year, earning over $1.4 billion worldwide.
Barbie has defied expectations by maintaining its position in the top 5 at the domestic box office for 10 consecutive weeks, even in the face of tough competition from high-profile releases such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Its latest 3-day earnings of $2.86 million further solidify its impressive box office performance.
According to Deadline, the Barbie movie has achieved a significant milestone at the domestic box office. Despite being available for home viewing since September 12, it is still holding strong in the Top 5 after 10 consecutive weeks. Currently sitting at No. 5, it has earned $2.86 million over the course of three days. This success is even more impressive considering the release of numerous wide-release films during this period, such as My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, Blue Beetle, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, all of which have failed to surpass Barbie's performance.
When Will Barbie's Top 5 Streak End?
Barbie currently holds the fifth position, lagging behind four more recent movies: Equalizer 3, A Haunting in Venice, The Nun II, and the newly released film The Expendables 4, which is competing for the top spot against The Nun. The Expendables 4 had the lowest opening weekend earnings of the entire franchise, with only $8 million. Therefore, if the movie's second-weekend drop is equally drastic, it is quite likely that it may fall below the fifth position.
While there is a possibility that Barbie could maintain its position at No. 5 next week, it seems unlikely. The upcoming release of Gareth Edwards' sci-fi epic The Creator and the horror sequel Saw X will most likely dominate the chart and put an end to Barbie's success streak. Despite having a popular cast and an IMAX release, Barbie will likely fall to either No. 7 or No. 8 right after reaching this milestone.
If, by some miracle, the movie manages to stay on the chart for another week, it will face intense competition from a series of new titles. The following weekend will see the release of The Exorcist: Believer, followed by the highly anticipated Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert documentary. Unfortunately, this leaves very little room for the highest-grossing movie of the year, despite Barbie's numerous box office records.
