Supernatural, one of The CW's (or The WB's) most successful TV shows, has had an impressive run of 15 seasons and 327 episodes. With a dedicated fan base, the show revolves around the Winchester family. At the heart of the series are the two brothers, Dean and Sam Winchester, around whom the show's narrative is built. Along the way, other family members are introduced, each playing a pivotal role in Dean and Sam's journey.
While not all characters in Supernatural are part of the Winchester family tree, notable figures such as Ruby, Castiel, Crowley, Lucifer, and others make significant contributions to the series. From grandparents to long-lost brothers, every family member holds importance in both the main show and the spinoff, The Winchesters. Surprisingly, the series finale introduces a new Winchester, expanding the total number of family members to eight.
Henry Winchester
In the CW television series Supernatural, Henry Winchester, portrayed by Gil McKinney, is introduced as Dean and Sam's grandfather and John's father. He was a prominent member of the Men of Letters, a secretive organization responsible for studying and documenting supernatural phenomena. Notably, Henry's lineage had a long-standing connection with the group, as his father and grandfather were also part of it.
Eventually, Henry met and married Millie, resulting in the birth of their son John. However, tragedy struck when the Men of Letters were attacked by a powerful entity known as a Knight of Hell. To protect the organization and himself, Henry embarked on a journey through time, carrying the key to their headquarters. This caused him to age at a slower rate, leading to his unexpected encounter with Dean and Sam in Supernatural season 8. Despite never having met Henry before, the brothers had the opportunity to bond with their grandfather and uncover the mysteries surrounding the Men of Letters.
Millie Winchester
John Winchester
Unfortunately, throughout Supernatural's 15 seasons, Millie Winchester's presence was never seen and she received little mention. The audience only knew her as Dean and Sam's grandmother, John's mother, and Henry's wife. Whether Millie had a close relationship with her son or ever met her grandsons remained uncertain. Nevertheless, in the prequel spinoff The Winchesters, Millie played a central role as portrayed by Bianca Kajlich. However, this depiction differed from her character in the original series, making it difficult to comprehend her true nature in the main timeline.
In the Supernatural series, besides Dean and Sam, John Winchester plays a crucial role. The character of John, portrayed by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, is the father of Dean and Sam. He provided them with extensive knowledge on hunting supernatural beings. After mysteriously disappearing, John joined the United States Marine Corps and fought in the Vietnam War. Upon his return, he fell in love with Mary Campbell, with whom he had two sons, Dean and Sam.
Following the passing of Mary, John made it his mission to hunt down monsters, particularly the one responsible for taking his wife's life, Azazel. Consequently, he unintentionally neglected Dean and Sam, resulting in a strained relationship between the father and his two sons. Nevertheless, both Dean and Sam followed their father's path and ultimately became hunters themselves. As the show Supernatural debuted, John had mysteriously disappeared, leaving Dean and Sam to embark on a quest to locate him.
Mary Winchester
As mentioned earlier, Samantha Smith portrayed Mary Winchester, John's wife and the mother of Dean and Sam, in the CW television series. Although John had no knowledge of it, Mary was a hunter herself, reluctantly following the footsteps of her parents. However, she decided to give up hunting once she and John began their family. Tragically, before their wedding took place, the malevolent demon Azazel took John's life. In a desperate act, Mary struck a deal with this monster. She agreed to let Azazel into her home in the future in exchange for bringing John back to life.
Azazel honored his agreement and made his way to the Winchester residence not long after Sam came into the world. Despite Mary's brave attempts to intervene, the demon mercilessly took her life. John, Dean, and Sam managed to escape just in time before Azazel obliterated their home, yet the devastating consequences had already taken their toll. With Mary's absence weighing heavily on his heart, John became resolute in seeking vengeance for her untimely demise in the thrilling series Supernatural.
Dean Winchester
Jensen Ackles brilliantly portrayed Dean Winchester throughout the entire 15-season run of Supernatural. Dean's character, much like Sam's, underwent a myriad of ups and downs during the course of the series. Born on January 24, 1979, Dean was the elder brother who often took on the role of a surrogate father to Sam, as their own father, John, was consumed by his quest to avenge Mary's death by hunting down Azazel. Dean's unwavering devotion to protecting his brother led to him enduring numerous deaths. His penchant for dying and subsequently being brought back to life became a notorious hallmark of this captivating dark fantasy TV show.
Sam Winchester
Like Jensen Ackles as Dean, Jared Padalecki portrayed Sam Winchester throughout the entirety of the CW series. Sam's birth took place on May 2, 1983, a few months prior to the tragic demise of his mother at the hands of the demon Azazel. Consequently, Sam never truly had the opportunity to know her, except for the instances when he and Dean traveled back in time. After Mary's passing, John, their father, imparted the knowledge of hunting to both Sam and Dean; however, Sam initially hesitated to embrace this familial calling. He decided to halt his hunting pursuits and instead focused on pursuing a law degree. Regrettably, the loss of his girlfriend played a significant role in pushing Sam to venture back into the world of hunting, alongside his devoted brother. Ultimately, though, Sam perpetually yearned for an ordinary existence, far removed from the clutches of the supernatural.
Adam Milligan
In Supernatural season 4, Dean and Sam became aware of their younger half-brother, Adam Milligan, portrayed by Jake Abel. Adam was the son of John Winchester, who had fathered him with a woman named Kate Milligan. Despite John's knowledge of Adam's existence, he never divulged this information to either Dean or Sam, and vice versa. Due to John's shortcomings as a father, Adam and his relationship with him was strained. It wasn't until Dean and Sam stumbled upon Adam in season 4 that they discovered they had a little brother, unfortunately after ghouls had already killed Adam and his mother. However, Adam was later resurrected.
Dean Winchester II
In the Supernatural series, the Winchester family concludes with the introduction of Dean Winchester II, portrayed by Spencer Borgeson. Following the permanent demise of Dean in the CW television series' finale, Sam embraced life to the fullest and eventually became a father. He named his son after his late brother, Dean Jr., although the identity of the mother remains unspecified. Evidently, Dean Jr. shared a strong bond with his father, as he was present at Sam's bedside during his peaceful passing from old age in the concluding episode of Supernatural.
