Although Samuel's first and only appearance in The Original Series was in season 1, episode 29, titled "Operation – Annihilate!", his role in the narrative is noteworthy. In this episode, he tragically succumbs to a flying parasite that drives him to madness, compelling him to seek out the nearest source of heat. A similar encounter with a comparable phenomenon takes place in season 1, episode 3, "Ghosts of Illyria," where the Enterprise crew of Strange New Worlds faces a similar challenge. However, unlike La'an Noonien-Singh, Samuel is unable to resist the urge to throw himself into the hottest and brightest light he can find.
