This article contains spoilers for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One. Tom Cruise returns to save the world as Ethan Hunt in the seventh installment of the beloved franchise. As the title suggests, this film marks the beginning of the end. Despite its runtime of over two and a half hours, Ethan's mission is far from over when the screen fades to black. Director Christopher McQuarrie, aiming to inject more emotion into the franchise and provide the characters with greater challenges, decided to split the movie into two parts. The first part ends with a cliffhanger, leaving the fate of the characters and the human race uncertain.
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One follows Ethan Hunt on his most perilous mission yet: the search for two halves of a key that unlocks an Artificial Intelligence called the Entity. The film introduces new characters, notably Grace (played by Hayley Atwell), a thief and Ethan's newest ally. Fans of the franchise will also be delighted to see familiar faces return, including Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell, Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, and Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust. Additionally, Vanessa Kirby's character, the White Widow, who was introduced in the previous film, Fallout, assumes a more prominent role in this installment. Henry Czerny also makes a comeback, reprising his role of Eugene Kittridge for the first time since 1996. By the time the credits roll, Ethan's race against time is far from over. While the film offers a conclusive ending, the major cliffhanger sets up what is to come in part two.
What Is Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 About?
The film centers around the Entity, an immensely powerful and sentient Artificial Intelligence that can only be controlled by two halves of a special key. When the Sebastopol, a Russian submarine, explodes, a dangerous competition ensues among global powers to obtain the key and gain control over the Entity. Ethan Hunt, assigned by the IMF (Impossible Mission Force), is tasked with locating and delivering both halves of the key to the US government. However, as Ethan uncovers the true potential of the Entity and the catastrophic consequences it could unleash in the wrong hands, he realizes that it must be destroyed.
Together with Luther, Benji, Ilsa, and Grace, a mysterious thief who becomes their ally, Ethan finds himself in conflict with his own government and other world powers as they track down the keys in order to destroy the Entity. However, they soon discover that they are not the only ones aware of the key's whereabouts. At a party where Ethan, Grace, and Ilsa learn about the key's significance, they encounter others who also covet it. Gabriel, an old enemy from Ethan's past and a representative of the Entity, seeks the key to facilitate the Entity's world domination. Additionally, the White Widow, a black-market arms dealer named Alanna Mitsopolis, aims to acquire the key to sell it to the highest bidder. Later, Gabriel kills Ilsa, leaving Ethan devastated. Luther warns Ethan against killing Gabriel, as he is the only one who knows how to use the key.
How Does Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 End?
Before the climactic showdown, Grace agrees to assist Ethan in his mission by joining the IMF. They prepare to board the Orient Express, where Alanna, the seller, is expected to meet her buyer. On the train, Gabriel encounters Denlinger, the Director of National Intelligence, who reveals that the key unlocks a chamber in the Sevastopol submarine. This chamber houses a computer capable of controlling or destroying the Entity, as it contains an early version of the AI. Gabriel demonstrates his prowess by eliminating Denlinger, then suspects his subordinate Paris of potential betrayal and attempts to kill her.
Grace successfully infiltrates the train by disguising herself as the White Widow using the franchise's signature masks. She rendezvous with the buyer, who unexpectedly turns out to be Eugene Kittridge, the CIA Director, possessing the complete key. Initially tempted to betray Ethan for personal gain and protection, Grace ultimately decides against it and cleverly swipes the key from Kittridge's possession. Meanwhile, Ethan embarks on his most perilous challenge yet: leaping off a mountain cliff to gain access to the moving train. Amidst the ensuing chaos, Gabriel seizes the opportunity and secures the key.
Following a gripping duel atop the fast-moving train, Ethan is faced with a difficult decision. Should he seek revenge against Gabriel for killing Ilsa and causing him immense pain, or should he spare Gabriel's life in order to uncover the secret behind the key? Ultimately, Gabriel manages to escape, but Ethan manages to snatch the key. Gabriel realizes his mistake too late and drives off in anger, knowing he has failed the Entity and left it vulnerable.
As the train hurtles forward without brakes, Gabriel destroys the tracks. In the heart-stopping climax of the film, Ethan and Grace detach the engine from the rest of the train, saving the passengers. However, several cars begin to plunge into the lake. Ethan and Grace are confronted with an apparently impossible challenge as they must ascend a series of vertically hanging cars before they crash into the water. When all hope seems lost, Paris, who is severely injured, miraculously rescues Ethan and Grace. She does this as a way to repay Ethan for sparing her life earlier. As her final act, she reveals to Ethan that the key unlocks the Russian submarine, known as the Sebastopol. In the concluding scene, Grace expresses her commitment to the IMF to Kittridge, while Ethan departs from the train with the complete key and the knowledge needed to thwart the entity, leaving Grace behind.
Ethan possesses the necessary information to eliminate the entity, but his mission is far from complete. It is probable that fans will witness him collaborating with his allies once again, devising a plan to gain access to Sebastopol and eradicate the Entity once and for all. Despite Grace now working for Kittridge, she comprehends the high stakes and will face the decision of where her loyalty lies. After failing his mission, Gabriel will likely seek revenge against Ethan, hinting at the possibility of a final showdown between the two. The cliffhanger ending of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One offers a fulfilling conclusion to the film, while also leaving unanswered questions and unresolved matters that will leave fans eagerly anticipating part two.
