Explaining Red Dead Redemption 2's Emerald Ranch Mystery
Every Red Dead Redemption 2 player has likely visited Emerald Ranch at least once. It is where Hosea introduces Arthur to his first Fence during a mandatory story mission. Since then, many players have found themselves returning to Emerald Ranch for various reasons - selling stolen goods, stolen wagons, or simply passing through on their way to the northeastern part of the map. However, unbeknownst to most players, Emerald Ranch holds a dark secret.
The mystery of Emerald Ranch comes to light when players interact with the NPCs working on the farm. Through their conversations, players learn that the owner of Emerald Ranch, Eugene Wegner, is not a pleasant man. Many NPCs talk about his violent and mean behavior, sharing stories of how he never gives his workers a day off and is not afraid to use physical punishment, even on the youngest workers. Additionally, a man sitting by a campfire near Emerald Ranch shares this information with the player, along with the rumor that Eugene's daughter has been missing for an extended period and that Eugene had an unsettling obsession with her.
Encountering a woman in need of a ride to Emerald Ranch reveals eerie details about a disturbing theory. According to her, farmhands refuse to discuss Eugene's daughter due to fear of punishment. Strangely, the woman sporadically appears at the window of the ranch's main house and is never seen leaving. Furthermore, she mentions a closed-down, bullet-ridden saloon on the ranch with bloodstains on the floor.
To verify these claims, players can locate the saloon themselves, finding it exactly as described. Behind the saloon, a small gravestone marks the accidental shooting of someone named Joshua shortly before Arthur Morgan's arrival at Emerald Ranch. Additionally, Eugene's daughter can be observed ominously standing in the window at specific times of the day. The discovery of a dilapidated mail wagon near the ranch further illuminates this mystery.
The content of a letter from Miriam's cousin Annabelle reveals that Miriam's partner, Joshua, was killed and Miriam has not left her house since then. It strongly suggests that Eugene, Miriam's father, discovered the relationship and in a fit of jealousy, murdered Joshua at his workplace, the saloon. Eugene then confined Miriam to their home and threatened anyone on the ranch who dares to mention it in his presence.
Red Dead Redemption 2 can be played on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
