The movie delves into a chilling storyline, placing significant emphasis on key characters such as William Afton, whose role is pivotal in unraveling the plot.

Set in the 80s, the Five Nights at Freddy's movie centers around a once-popular children's entertainment restaurant that has since closed its doors. Enter Mike (portrayed by Josh Hutcherson), a down-on-his-luck individual who finds himself employed as the new security guard at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Little does he know, he is about to face unimaginable horrors lurking within the animatronics, with strict instructions to keep everyone out.

The movie incorporates key characters from the game, such as William Afton, who serves as the primary adversary and the mastermind behind the animatronics. While fans possess substantial knowledge about this character, the Five Nights at Freddy's movie introduces certain alterations to amplify the horror narrative's intricacy. Additionally, the film amalgamates two game characters, resulting in the creation of Vanessa Afton. Now, let us delve into unraveling the storyline of the movie. Please be advised, spoilers lie ahead!

Mike learns the truth about who Vanessa is in Five Nights at Freddy’s

Upon commencing his employment at Freddy's, Mike encounters Vanessa, a resident police officer who frequents the establishment during her patrols. It doesn't take long for Mike to discover that Vanessa was well aware of the sinister nature of the animatronics, further disclosing the startling revelation that she is, in fact, the offspring of William Afton.

Despite appearing as a friendly local police officer, Vanessa possesses an uncanny amount of knowledge about Freddy's that extends beyond childhood visits. It is when Mike brings his younger sister along to his workplace one night that she forms a bond with the animatronics, prompting Vanessa to confess her intimate familiarity with them. However, Mike grows increasingly suspicious as Vanessa effortlessly navigates the establishment, knowing the exact locations of backrooms and other hidden areas. When Abby, Mike's little sister, faces the imminent danger of being transformed into one of the animatronics, Vanessa finds herself compelled to reveal the truth, leaving her with no other choice.

Vanessa Afton, the daughter of the animatronics' creator, refuses to go with him due to her extensive knowledge of his actions. Growing up at Freddy's, she witnessed her father's sinister ways and the fact that he kidnapped and haunted children. To prove her connection, she shows Mike a photo of herself and her father in the yellow bunny suit outside of Freddy's.

In the world of Five Nights at Freddy's, William Afton, who is revealed to be Steve Raglan (portrayed by Matthew Lillard), the career counselor who hired Mike for his security job. Vanessa explains that the series of child disappearances at Freddy's led to the location shutting down. It is likely that William changed his identity to avoid future complications. Being aware of her father's true nature, Vanessa frequently tried to warn others employed by him about the dangers at Freddy's, just as she did with Mike.

Five Nights at Freddy’s makes a few changes from the games

For Vanessa and William Afton, the movie combines two characters from the original games, Elizabeth Afton and Vanessa, the security guard.

Fans of the original games would immediately recognize the movie's deviation in order to craft a more enduring horror narrative on screen. In the games, William Afton's appearances are scarce, particularly in human form. Instead, he is depicted as a purple-colored figure, aptly dubbed "Purple Guy" in Five Nights at Freddy's 2, sporting a disturbing grin. At one instance, he is portrayed as tall and thin, clad in a security guard uniform.

The Five Nights at Freddy's movie takes some artistic liberty by presenting William as a somewhat eerie career advisor who changes his identity following the incidents of missing children. As for Vanessa, avid fans would discern that she may embody a combination of the video game versions of Elizabeth and Vanessa.

William's daughter is also present in the games, but she is depicted as a young child with red hair, wearing a pink shirt and blue skirt. The games portray her as an innocent-looking child who has a mysterious connection to the animatronics, particularly Circus Baby, whom she eventually possesses. However, the movie version of Afton's daughter is not portrayed as a young girl but rather as a character resembling Vanessa A. or Vanny from the Five Nights at Freddy's game.

Vanessa, unlike other characters in the games, has red hair and green eyes and also works as a security guard at Freddy's. The movie may have subtly referenced the original character by making Vanessa a police officer. However, in the game, Vanessa transforms into Vanny, one of William's deranged accomplices.

There is a prominent theory suggesting that Vanessa, a character in the game, could potentially be William's other daughter. This theory is based on her last name starting with A and her resemblance to Elizabeth. However, it remains uncertain if Elizabeth will make an appearance on the big screen. Time will ultimately reveal the answer.

During an interview with Dexerto, director Emma Tammi revealed that the connection between Vanessa and William in the movie was a crucial guideline provided by creator Scott Cawthorne. "From the original script, which I then worked on for a rewrite, this connection was already established and deeply integrated. We were aware that this would be the narrative we were conveying, and it was Scott's vision," she explained.
