Chicago PD introduced Nadia Decotis in the first season, where she quickly formed a close bond with Detective Erin Lindsay. Unfortunately, just one season later, Nadia tragically passed away. Initially, Nadia was introduced as an underage prostitute and a troubled drug addict, which resonated with Lindsay on a personal level. After Lindsay arrested Nadia, she offered her assistance with another case and presented her with a choice: to either continue using drugs or seek help at a local clinic.
Throughout the show, Nadia made occasional appearances in Lindsay's life. Initially, she didn't follow Lindsay's advice to get clean, but eventually reached out when she was ready during season 1. Despite facing a few relapses, Nadia managed to achieve and maintain sobriety in season 2. Lindsay provided her with a spare room in her apartment and secured her a job as an administrative assistant in the Intelligence Unit. Nadia even pursued criminology college courses, with aspirations of becoming a police officer in the future. Although things seemed hopeful for Nadia, her time on the NBC show came to an end after an encounter with a murderer in Chicago PD.
Nadia Was Abducted & Killed By Yates
In the final episode of season 2 of Chicago PD, Gregory Yates, a serial killer, abducted Nadia in Chicago and transported her to New York in the trunk of his car. The Intelligence Unit had been investigating a series of murders connected to Yates, and he specifically targeted Nadia to inflict pain upon Detective Lindsay whom he wanted to punish. This episode was part of a special crossover event involving Chicago Fire and Law & Order: SVU, thus the chilling storyline continued in season 16, episode 20 of Law & Order: SVU.
The subsequent episode of Law & Order: SVU resumed the story with Yates and Nadia. Despite Nadia's efforts to appeal to him, Yates was determined to kill her. Lindsay, Hank Voight, and their fellow officers followed Yates to New York and joined forces with Olivia Benson to pursue their investigation. Tragically, a tip led them to a beach where they discovered Nadia's lifeless body. Yates had carried out his promise and subjected her to rape, torture, and murder. This horrific discovery left Lindsay devastated as she was present during the recovery of Nadia's body in Law & Order: SVU.
Nadia's Death Helped Convict Yates
The Intelligence Unit and Sergeant Benson, although confident that Yates was the perpetrator, lacked concrete evidence to prove it in Law & Order season 16, episode 20. Nonetheless, Assistant District Attorney Rafael Barba issued an arrest warrant for Yates, initiating a court trial against the serial killer. In a peculiar twist, Yates opted to represent himself. Despite his malicious nature, he displayed intelligence that proved challenging for the prosecution. Fortunately, Yates' twisted fascination with Nadia's ordeal surfaced during his cross-examination of the medical examiner.
Yates displayed an abnormal obsession with the details of Nadia's final moments, visibly deriving pleasure from reliving her torture in the courtroom. The jury took note of this disturbing behavior, sealing his fate. Ultimately, Yates received a conviction for the rape and murder of Nadia, revealing her pivotal role in apprehending a serial rapist and killer. While Nadia's tragic death in Chicago PD held no solace, it did ensure that Yates would be confined to prison. However, this would not be the culmination of Yates' tale.
Nadia Became A Police Officer Posthumously
: In Chicago PD season 3, the convicted rapist and murderer managed to escape from his New York prison and return to Chicago. His sole intention was to seek revenge against Lindsay. Despite his belief in being prepared for a confrontation, his emotions overwhelmed him, leading to a regrettable outcome. In a desperate attempt to harm Lindsay, Yates met his demise as she acted in self-defense and took his life. The relentless taunting he had subjected Lindsay to regarding Nadia's death finally pushed her to the brink, compelling her to pull the trigger and find solace from the anguish she had endured since losing her. After her demise in season 2 of Chicago PD, Voight coerced George Baumgartner, the Commander of the Bureau of Organized Crime's Special Functions Division, into authorizing the acquisition of a memorial stone for Nadia outside the police station. Subsequently, the members of the Intelligence Unit gathered around the memorial where Lindsay proceeded to read a letter from the deputy chief, addressing Nadia's untimely demise. In a posthumous act, the chief had enlisted Nadia as a police officer in the CPD.
Nadia still harbored dreams of emulating Lindsay, despite her untimely demise. Recognizing Nadia's immense potential, Lindsay expressed regret that her friend's life was cruelly cut short by a despicable individual. Nadia, however, managed to turn her life around and would have positively impacted numerous lives, just like Lindsay. Unfortunately, the creative team behind the Chicago PD series made the decision to transform Nadia's character into a vehicle for Lindsay's future storyline.
Nadia's Death Sent Lindsay Into A Spiral
Lindsay assumed full responsibility for Nadia's tragic demise in Chicago PD, despite not being at fault. Consumed with guilt, the detective spiraled into darkness, ultimately resulting in her resignation during the season 2 finale. Prior to her departure, Lindsay succumbed to excessive drinking and drug use, causing her consistent tardiness at work. She regressed into a version of herself she had long abandoned, deeply alarming Voight, Jay Halstead, and their fellow officers. Voight, having experienced a similar downfall, displayed less willingness to assist Lindsay during this tumultuous period.
Lindsay's downward spiral continued in season 3, triggered by her mother's reentry into her life and the exploitation of her depression and guilt. However, a turning point came when Halstead was abducted in the season premiere, prompting Lindsay to play a crucial role in saving him. This act of redemption led Voight to offer her a second chance. Lindsay made the decision to sever ties with her mother, move in with Voight, and undergo regular drug tests. Throughout the course of Chicago PD season 3, Lindsay's well-being improved, culminating in her seeking justice for Nadia's death.
