Star Wars is primarily a tale of the battle between light and dark, set in a captivating universe filled with fantastical elements. Within this expansive galaxy, the struggle between good and evil is embodied by the Jedi and the Sith, who possess the power of the force. In the prequel trilogy, the Jedi are numerous, while the Sith are limited to only two members at a time, a concept known as the "rule of two." Although briefly mentioned in the films, it is the supplementary material that delves deeper into this aspect of the lore.
The narrative of the Sith's Rule of Two is unveiled in Drew Karpyshyn's Darth Bane book trilogy. Centered around the eponymous Sith Lord, these novels chronicle Darth Bane's ascent to power, the creation of the Rule of Two, and the subsequent disappearance of the Sith until their resurgence in Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace. While essential for devoted Star Wars fans, those in a hurry can glean the key details of Darth Bane's story right here.
Bane's Origins
The man later known as Darth Bane was originally named Dessel and spent his early years on the little-known outer rim world called Apatros. Growing up without a mother and suffering from an abusive father, Dessel had to navigate life on his own. He started working as a miner on his home planet at a young age. In a conflict with his father, Dessel unknowingly used his Force powers to kill him while he slept. This incident, along with other uncontrolled displays of his abilities, resulted in the accidental death of a Republic soldier. To avoid prosecution, Dessel was compelled to flee and seek refuge with the Sith.
Upon joining the military of the Sith's Brotherhood of Darkness, Dessel quickly distinguished himself as a skilled soldier and gradually climbed the ranks. Respected and revered by his fellow soldiers, he led his unit to numerous victories, gaining substantial influence along the way. When one of his superiors discovered his Force capabilities, Dessel was sent to the Sith homeworld of Korriban to train as a Sith. It was during this time that he adopted the name Bane, a name that would forge a legendary legacy lasting for thousands of years.
As A Sith Lord
In the years that followed, Bane's training as a Sith led to his disillusionment with the organization's structure. He deemed the new Brotherhood of Darkness to be inferior to its predecessors. Through studying Darth Revan's teachings, Bane discovered an extensive and enlightening understanding of the dark side of the Force, surpassing what he had been taught at the Sith Academy. Determined to bring an end to the Brotherhood, he concluded that its destruction was necessary.
Considering the current Sith teachings to be ineffective, Bane foresaw the eventual downfall of the Sith due to internal conflicts and inadequate leadership. He devised a new concept for the Sith's continuation — the Rule of Two. According to his proposed rule, the Sith would be limited to only a master and an apprentice, ensuring minimal numbers.
Darth Bane spent a considerable amount of time plotting and deceiving his way to success, ultimately achieving his goal of dismantling the Brotherhood. During a confrontation with Jedi forces, he cleverly manipulated all of the Sith forces to annihilate themselves, leaving him as the sole survivor of the Sith. At this point, Bane's existence remained unknown to both the rest of the galaxy and the Jedi, enabling him to covertly establish his rule of two.
Taking on an apprentice named Zannah, Bane established the first apprentice in the newly-formed lineage of the Rule of Two. For years, they operated in obscurity, evading detection from the Jedi. When a small group of Jedi discovered their presence, Bane and Zannah swiftly eliminated them, ensuring their identities remained undisclosed. Despite their initially strong master and apprentice bond, fate, as it would for future generations of Sith, intervened. Zannah grew dissatisfied with her master and eventually betrayed him, leading to a deadly confrontation where Darth Bane met his demise at the hands of his own apprentice.
Darth Bane's Legacy
Zannah continued the Rule of Two, ensuring that Darth Bane's legacy endured for many generations until the events of the Prequel Trilogy. During this period, the Sith finally capitalized on the secrecy bestowed upon them by Darth Bane a millennium earlier. Through manipulative tactics, the Sith seized control of the galaxy through the leadership of Darth Sidious and his apprentice, Darth Vader.
Undoubtedly one of the most influential Sith Lords in history, Bane revolutionized the Sith Order. His teachings brought an end to thousands of years of struggle, culminating in the establishment of the all-powerful Galactic Empire, which reached its zenith by the time the original Star Wars film premiered in 1977.
