Raj encountered Siri, Apple's virtual assistant, in a dream during an episode of The Big Bang Theory. At the time, the actor playing Siri was relatively unknown. Raj faced difficulties in his love life throughout the show, initially struggling to communicate with women due to selective mutism. However, this issue gradually resolved itself in later seasons. Ultimately, Raj remained single in the series finale but appeared content, attending a Nobel Prize ceremony with Sarah Michelle Gellar as his companion.
While Raj's love life might be further explored in a spinoff of The Big Bang Theory, one of his more comical romantic mishaps occurred in season 5, episode 12, titled "The Beta Test Initiation". During this episode, Raj developed romantic feelings for Siri, the virtual assistant on his iPhone. In a peculiar turn of events, he even dreamt of meeting the actual person behind Siri's voice, though the encounter turned into a nightmare when he couldn't communicate with her in person. Notably, the voice of Siri varies depending on the user's country. In the United States, where The Big Bang Theory is set, Siri's recordings were performed by Susan Bennett.
Becky O'Donohue From American Idol Played Siri On The Big Bang Theory
Bennett's lines for Apple were recorded in 2005, but they were not used for Siri until 2011. However, Raj does not encounter Bennett's version of Siri in his dream sequence during The Big Bang Theory episode. Instead, Becky O'Donohue, an actor, model, basketball player, and American Idol finalist, portrays Siri in the scene. This was not O'Donohue's first television appearance; she had previously appeared in a 2010 episode of Psych and an episode of House MD. After her role in The Big Bang Theory, O'Donohue also appeared in an episode of The Mentalist and competed alongside her sister in a Minute to Win It episode.
Although Raj's romantic relationships in The Big Bang Theory show that he eventually becomes capable of conversing with women, he does not succeed in doing so in season 5. Consequently, O'Donohue's role in The Big Bang Theory is rather brief, as Raj soon realizes that he cannot communicate with Siri even within his dream. This means that O'Donohue does not reprise her role from "The Beta Test Initiative," although the episode received positive reviews from critics when it was released in 2012. Fortunately, Raj's love life improves after his encounter with Siri, and selective mutism becomes less prominent as a storyline in the later seasons.
The Real-Life Siri Shows Up In Raj’s Dream
In Raj's dream, Siri took on the appearance of a joyful, warm, and stunning woman. Raj, who had previously flirted with Siri in an uncomfortable manner, was taken aback and lost his ability to speak. Consequently, he had to observe helplessly as the chance to pursue a romantic relationship with the "real-life" Siri slipped away. By the conclusion of season 6, episode 24 of The Big Bang Theory, titled "The Bon Voyage Reaction," Raj had overcome his difficulty with speaking and could now engage in conversations with women. This newfound ability opened doors to numerous romantic possibilities, and Raj no longer relied on technology for his love life.
