Not content with just replicating the art, the game also captures the essence and atmosphere of the iconic series. To ensure authenticity, Upstream Arcade collaborated with Mignola himself, who provided guidance on the story and overall direction of the game. Adapting a comic with such a iconic and original art style like Hellboy poses a significant challenge - how to translate the original artist's work into a digital format. Upstream Arcade, however, was fortunate enough to have already incorporated their love for the Mignolaverse and Hellboy into their previous game, West of Dead. It was this connection that ultimately led to the studio being offered the opportunity to work on a Hellboy game. Good Shepherd recognized the passion and influence present in their previous work and asked, "Would you like to work on a Hellboy game?"

The team embarked on the task of incorporating Mignola's distinctive style into a video game, aiming to capture its dynamic use of light and shadow, as well as distorted figures. Mignola's artwork is renowned for the baroque shadows and bold lines that give it a unique and recognizable appearance compared to more traditional comic art styles. However, translating this art into a video game posed challenges, particularly with regards to gameplay visibility due to the darkness. Addressing this issue became a priority for the team, albeit a challenging one.

Excitedly, we implemented an abundance of black throughout our game levels, proudly proclaiming, "Behold, Mike Mignola's Hellboy!" Yet, when we played through those levels, the walls on the other side of the room became completely obscured, leaving us unable to see them.

In addition to faithfully depicting the art style of the comics, it was crucial for the team to involve the visionary creator of the Mignolaverse, Mike Mignola. Mignola, the mastermind behind Hellboy, has a history of providing valuable input for adaptations of his work. He believes in offering guidance while acknowledging the expertise of those working in different mediums. Mignola recognizes that he is a comic creator while there are film and game creators who excel in their respective fields. He understands that video games have unique requirements, such as the need for players to fail before succeeding, which don't always align with a traditional linear comic storyline. Therefore, Mignola gave his blessing for the team to develop a Hellboy narrative that fits within the game's designed structure.

Hellboy: Web of Wyrd is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
