Unlocking the Mysteries of Harry Potter: The Chamber of Secrets Unveiled

Unveiling the enigmatic Chamber of Secrets in Harry Potter, discover its creator, the presence of a Basilisk, and the chilling history of its multiple openings

Throughout the Harry Potter series, numerous significant locations can be found, with one of the most crucial being the Chamber of Secrets. Hidden deep beneath Hogwarts, this chamber holds a rich history within the magical school, filled with dark and unexpected twists. As a direct association with Slytherin, instances like the Chamber of Secrets further contribute to the notion that Slytherin is the "evil" house at Hogwarts.

The contents of the Chamber of Secrets and its true purpose are not widely known within the wizarding world. Despite its secrecy, the chamber becomes a prominent element in the Harry Potter series starting from the second book, Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets. This chamber continues to hold importance as it offers the heroes a means to ultimately destroy a challenging horcrux later in the series.

Who Created The Chamber Of Secrets?

The Chamber of Secrets was actually established by Salazar Slytherin, one of the founders of Hogwarts. In addition to founding the Slytherin house, Slytherin made some unexpected contributions to the magical school. Among these, the chamber and the presence of a basilisk were the most astonishing for many people. Although this might seem peculiar for one of the founders, as avid Harry Potter enthusiasts may already know, Slytherin was unlike the other founders in numerous ways.

The chamber itself was constructed during the medieval era, though not immediately after the establishment of the school. It appears that Slytherin decided to create the chamber at a later time, likely for malevolent purposes. Inside the chamber, there is a large statue of Slytherin housing the enormous basilisk. The Chamber of Secrets was so expertly concealed by Slytherin that even subsequent headmasters of Hogwarts were unable to ascertain whether it actually existed or if it was merely a legend.

Why Is There A Basilisk In The Chamber Of Secrets?

It may appear strange that a founder would hide a dangerous creature like a basilisk beneath the school, but understanding Salazar Slytherin's obsession with pure-blood heritage explains it. As time went on, Slytherin's dissatisfaction with muggle-born students attending Hogwarts became insurmountable. Thankfully, the other founders disagreed with Slytherin's views, leading to his departure from the school.

Before leaving, Slytherin constructed the Chamber of Secrets and placed a basilisk inside it, envisioning that one day the heir of Slytherin would open it and purge the school of muggle blood. While this may sound extreme, Slytherin's deep loathing for muggle-born witches and wizards pushed him to forsake not just his friends but also the school he helped establish. Tragically for Hogwarts' students, one of Salazar Slytherin’s heirs, Tom Riddle, eventually found his way to the school and unlocked the chamber.

How Many Times Has The Chamber Of Secrets Been Opened?

The film Harry Potter and the Chamber Of Secrets depicts the chamber being opened on two separate occasions: once during Tom Riddle’s tenure at the school, and again during Harry Potter’s time there. One of the most prominent instances of the chamber opening occurred during Tom Riddle's fifth year at Hogwarts. It was during this period that he discovered the chamber and gained control over the basilisk inside. As the boy who would eventually become Voldemort, Tom Riddle unleashed a wave of terror, though his involvement remained unknown until many years later.

Tragically, during this time, Tom Riddle was indirectly responsible for the death of Moaning Myrtle, who would later become a well-known ghost. By cunningly shifting blame onto Rubeus Hagrid and his pet Aragog, he managed to evade suspicion for the attacks on the students. Although not an entirely successful endeavor, this event marked one of Voldemort's initial failures. In order to assist another person in utilizing the basilisk in the Chamber of Secrets to claim victory, Voldemort had no choice but to entrust a diary-turned-Horcrux that contained his youthful essence.

The chamber remained sealed until Harry Potter arrived at Hogwarts for his second year. Instead of being opened by another unknown heir of Slytherin, it was Ginny Weasley who was compelled to open it. Under the control of Tom Riddle's memory, Ginny had no choice but to obey his every command. The silver lining during this period was that although Tom succeeded in injuring students, no Hogwarts students lost their lives.

The opening of the chamber and the injuries inflicted on students motivated Harry to take immediate action. Thankfully, Harry was not only able to enter the chamber but also managed to confront Tom Riddle and his deadly basilisk, ultimately rescuing Ginny Weasley. This turn of events proved to be a major setback for Voldemort, as he was prevented from fully regaining his power and also lost one of his Horcruxes in the process.

Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger were the ones who, surprisingly, opened the Chamber of Secrets in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two. Ron's previous exposure to Harry speaking parseltongue enabled him to access the chamber. In a significant turn of events, they managed to foil Voldemort's plans by destroying one of his Horcruxes using a fang from the deceased basilisk. This occurrence marked the final legitimate opening of the chamber on-screen. However, it should be noted that the chamber was also opened in the mobile game Harry Potter: Magic Awakened.
