Proximity to the individual is beneficial in facilitating this process, as time and space hold significance in the realm of magic. However, Harry's circumstances diverge from the norm due to his unintentional connection to Voldemort as a Horcrux. Consequently, both individuals are able to delve into each other's minds from a distance. Advanced Legilimency also encompasses the ability to manipulate thoughts, introducing false visions and memories into an individual's mind.

The earliest documented case of a renowned Legilimens dates back to the 10th century, with Salazar Slytherin. Slytherin, along with the other founders of Hogwarts, imbued the Sorting Hat with this skill, enabling it to analyze students' minds and determine their appropriate house placement. In Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, it is disclosed that Queenie Goldstein possesses an innate talent for Legilimency, requiring no incantation or wand usage to access this ability.

What Is Occlumency?

Occlumency, an ancient and mysterious form of magic, has been practiced since medieval times. It serves as a defense mechanism, protecting the mind from external intrusion, particularly by Legilimency. Through Occlumency, one can shield their thoughts, feelings, and memories, preventing others from accessing or manipulating them. By making the mind void and devoid of any content, a Legilimens is unable to gain entry. More advanced practitioners of Occlumency possess the ability to suppress specific emotions or memories, ensuring that a Legilimens believes what the Occlumens wishes them to believe, effectively concealing any falsehoods.

In an attempt to prevent Voldemort from exploiting his connection with Harry, Dumbledore insists that Harry receive Occlumency lessons from Snape. However, this endeavor proves to be unsuccessful. Rowling clarifies in an interview that Harry struggles with Occlumency due to his emotions being too close to the surface and his deep-rooted damage. He is unable to suppress his emotions and memories, rendering his attempts at Occlumency futile. Another contributing factor to his failure is Voldemort's expertise in Occlumency, as Snape warns Harry about the difficulty weak-willed individuals face against his powers. In addition to Voldemort, Snape possesses the skill of Occlumency, demonstrated by his ability to conceal his loyalty to Dumbledore from the Dark Lord. Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald also possess exceptional Occlumency skills, as shown when Grindelwald refuses to let Voldemort enter his mind in Nurmengard. Bartemius Crouch Jr. proves his Occlumency skills by successfully hiding his true identity during his time at Hogwarts. Horace Slughorn is rumored to possess some proficiency in Occlumency, which is why Dumbledore does not forcibly extract Slughorn's memory regarding Horcruxes.
