How Do You Get Return? What to Know About Return
Pokemon in Pokemon GO can perform Fast Attacks and Charged Attacks. Fast Attacks are the primary moves used in battles, and they also help charge up the Charged Attacks. Charged Attacks are powerful moves that can only be used when they are fully charged. When a Charged Attack is unleashed, it can cause significant damage to the opponent.
However, not all Charged Attacks are equally effective, and there are some that can be replaced with a TM. A Purified Pokemon in Pokemon GO has a unique Charged Attack called Return. This move is of the Normal type and has moderate base power. Due to its modest power, some trainers may prefer to replace it with a different Charged Attack. Although Return may not be the best choice for a Pokemon that cannot receive the Same-Type Attack Bonus (STAB), it does offer certain advantages.
How Do You Get Return?
In Pokemon GO, the Charged Attack Return is a special move that is only available to Purified Pokemon. To obtain a Purified Pokemon, trainers must first capture a Shadow Pokemon. Shadow Pokemon are used by Team GO Rocket Grunts and Leaders. Trainers can encounter Team GO Rocket by either tapping on Rocket Balloons or visiting a Poke Stop marked with the Rocket Logo.
Once trainers successfully defeat a Team GO Rocket Leader, they will unlock a Bonus Challenge. In this challenge, trainers have the opportunity to capture one of the Shadow Pokemon from the Grunts or Leaders' lineup. It is recommended to use Razz Berries (or Golden Razz Berries for Legendary Pokemon) when attempting to capture a Shadow Pokemon, as this will increase the chances of a successful capture.
In order to encounter Rocket Leaders, players must have a Rocket Radar. The Rocket Radar can be obtained by collecting 6 Mysterious Components from Rocket Grunts. As part of the Special Research, players will receive a Super Rocket Radar, which allows them to encounter Giovanni. Giovanni will always have a Legendary Pokemon.
After adding a Shadow Pokemon to their team, players can choose to Purify the Pokemon. This process always requires the use of Stardust and Candy. Common Pokemon can be purified with as little as 3 Candy and 3000 Stardust, while Legendary/Mythical Pokemon will require 20 Candy and 20000 Stardust.
Upon capture, Shadow Pokemon exclusively possess Frustration as their Charged Attack, which is a Normal-type move that benefits from the Shadow Bonus, resulting in heightened damage compared to a standard Charged Attack. However, once players purify the Shadow Pokemon, Frustration transforms into Return, losing the Shadow Bonus. To acquire a second Charged Attack, players can opt for the "New Attack" feature on the Pokemon's page, which necessitates both Stardust and Candy as resources.
If players are looking to remove Return from their Pokémon's movepool, they will require a Charged TM (or Elite Charged TM). These valuable items can occasionally be obtained as rewards for completing Timed Research or Special Research Tasks. PvP and GO Battle League also offer an alternative method to acquire Charged TMs.
What to Know About Return
In Gyms & Raids, Return deals 35 damage, while in PvP it inflicts 130 damage. Although it requires "three bars" of charge, it is not the quickest Charged Attack in Pokemon GO. Moreover, using Return does not grant Tyranitar (Rock/Dark-type) the advantage of STAB (Same-Type Attack Bonus), making it more advantageous for the Pokémon to have a Charged Attack from its own move pool.
Additionally, Normal-type Pokemon like Snorlax are ideal candidates for utilizing Return as their Charged Attack. It is also advantageous if the Pokemon possesses a Fast Attack that can swiftly generate Energy. When considering a Purified Snorlax, the combination of Lick (Fast Attack) and Return (Charged Attack) is highly recommended.
In PvP, Return is more effective in dealing damage compared to Gym and Team GO Rocket battles. Another benefit of keeping Return is its ability to gradually remove Protect Shields. When facing a Team GO Rocket Leader, they will always activate Protect Shields for the trainer's first two Charged Attacks. To avoid wasting a Charged Attack with a Type-advantage on a Protect Shield, it is recommended to use Return instead. It is also possible to use certain Charged Attacks twice consecutively if they have been adequately charged by the Fast Attack.
Store energy for the charged attack by using the type-advantage, and utilize Return while the Rocket Leader still has Protect Shields. Ultimately, trainers' decisions on whether to keep Return will differ. Pokemon GO trainers should take into account their Pokemon's typing as well as if they possess sufficient Stardust or Candy to unlock a second charged attack. If players prefer their Pokemon to have two charged attacks that align with its typing, they can simply utilize a Charged TM/Elite Charged TM to remove Return.
