The Outlast Trials sets itself apart in the world of online multiplayer survival horror by offering a unique gameplay experience that goes beyond the typical single-player story mode. The game stays true to the universe's lore while challenging players to complete a therapy program as a Reagent at Murkoff Facility and emerge as one of the Reborn. Rather than traditional levels, players must overcome trials with puzzle-based tasks in order to achieve their ultimate goal. These trials make up the main part of the therapy program and offer the opportunity to earn Release Tokens, which can be exchanged for freedom. However, earning these tokens is not a guarantee, so players must strategize in order to increase their chances of becoming Reborn in The Outlast Trials.
How to Get Release Tokens in The Outlast Trials
Upon completion of these three programs, players unlock Program X, which is the ultimate therapy program. This program rewards players with Release Tokens upon successfully finishing all the trials. Each of the four therapy programs takes place in a unique location, starting with the Police Station, then the Fun Park, followed by the Orphanage.
Players must complete four trials, which include two MK-Challenges and a Final Exam, to finish the programs. Initially, not all programs are accessible, but as players achieve good grades on trials, they unlock them by increasing their Therapy Level. Only when players finish all programs with a passing grade, Program X is unlocked. In online multiplayer matches, if players participate in a group and the host is undertaking a Program X trial, they can earn a Release Token after the trial without being required to enter Program 1-3.
Players can earn a Release Token by successfully completing each of the ten trials in Program X. These trials are similar to the ones featured in previous programs. Once players have collected all ten Release Tokens, they can make their way to the door located under the "Join the Reborn" sign in The Sleep Room. At this point, they can speak to the man sitting at the desk to proceed further.
How to Be Reborn in The Outlast Trials
Escaping the Murkoff Facility as a Reborn patient is no easy feat. Players must overcome a final solo trial before they can truly claim their freedom. This trial takes place in the same mansion as the tutorial introduction, but is much more challenging with increased numbers of enemies and tasks to complete.
After completing the final trial, players get to replay Program X with a new Reagent and gain fresh rewards, possibly leading to a second rebirth. They can maintain their Therapy Level along with all the perks and equipment they had previously acquired. Early Access for The Outlast Trials is now available on PC.
