Wear OS serves as the software platform for various smartwatches including the Samsung Galaxy Watch series, Google Pixel Watch lineup, and smartwatches from brands like Fossil and Mobvoi. Initially introduced with the Galaxy Watch 6 series, the latest version of Wear OS will now come pre-installed on the Pixel Watch 2 and will be available on other watches in the near future, according to Google.
In a recent announcement, Google stated that the Wear OS 4 update is now considered "stable." Interestingly, this raises questions about its stability during the two-month period in which it was available exclusively on the Galaxy Watch 6 series. The newly unveiled Pixel Watch 2 will come equipped with Wear OS 4 right out of the box, while the original Pixel Watch is set to receive an update to Wear OS 4 later in the year. Google assures that other watches will also receive the update soon, although no specific dates or a list of supported models have been provided.
The Wear OS 4 update introduces a revamped Watch Face Format, jointly developed by Google and Samsung, simplifying the creation of customized watch faces for smartwatches. With this new technology, developers can now effortlessly generate watch faces without concerning themselves with code optimization or battery performance. Additionally, the update incorporates a new Jetpack library, enhancing support for animations in app tiles, providing app developers with an opportunity to explore its capabilities.
Moreover, the update facilitates the seamless migration of a smartwatch from one phone to another, eliminating the need for a full factory reset. This feature, applicable to watches that support cloud backup such as the Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2, permits the retention of a certain amount of app data during the transfer. Although most users do not frequently switch their primary smartphones, whenever the need arises, Wear OS 4 ensures a smoother smartwatch setup process, reducing any inconvenience.
Google's latest version of Wear OS, Wear OS 4, is built on Android 13, a significant upgrade from the previous Android 11 foundation that powered Wear OS 3. While many of the additions in Android 12 and 13 do not directly affect smartwatches, these updates do bring valuable privacy enhancements and performance optimizations.
Fossil, Mobvoi, and other manufacturers of Wear OS smartwatches have yet to provide confirmation regarding the timing of the update to Wear OS 4. However, developers can already access the update through the Android Studio emulator.
