Starfield, the upcoming Bethesda sandbox title, will allow modders to expand the game by adding new planets to its star systems.

The game will feature over one thousand planets without mods.

The modding scene for Starfield is expected to be massive.

Starfield stays true to its roots as a Bethesda sandbox game by giving modders the ability to greatly enhance the base game, including the option to add new planets to its already expansive star systems. Running on Creation Engine 2, the successor to the engine responsible for Skyrim's thriving modding community, Starfield showcased impressive graphical and technical advancements during the Starfield Direct deep dive presentation, although some minor quirks can still be expected.

The core Starfield experience boasts a staggering number of planets, reaching into the thousands, although only a fraction of them, around 10%, will be suitable for habitation. While the game will offer hundreds of hours of meticulously crafted content, Starfield aims to push the envelope further with its ambitious use of procedural generation, surpassing previous Bethesda titles. These procedurally generated zones on the planets are sure to provide some diversity for players at launch, but one could also argue that they present endless opportunities for the modding community or official DLC to transform them into something truly extraordinary.

Pete Hines has confirmed in a recent Gamescom interview that modders will have access to tools in Starfield that allow them to create new quests, stories, and even new planets. This opens up incredible possibilities for total conversion mods, such as recreating iconic locations from the Mass Effect franchise. The powerful features of Creation Engine 2 make this ambitious undertaking possible. With the amount of content coming at launch, including the Shattered Space DLC, the modding scene for Starfield could potentially surpass that of Skyrim. For modders, it is a fresh start on a new engine with the modern Creation Kit. While it remains to be seen how Starfield mods will work within its Creation Club, it is expected that players will primarily rely on Nexus Mods for modded content.

The Elder Scrolls 6, being developed on the Creation Engine 2 just like Starfield, will give modders a significant advantage when the highly anticipated sequel to Skyrim is released. Todd Howard envisions The Elder Scrolls 6 as the ultimate fantasy simulator, complementing Starfield's focus on sci-fi. While it is yet to be determined if Starfield will live up to its high expectations, the initial responses have been predominantly positive. Starfield will be released for PC and Xbox Series X|S on September 6, 2023.
