When players first start Super Mario Bros. Wonder, they will have the option to choose from 12 different playable characters. These include familiar favorites such as Mario, Luigi, Daisy, Toadette, and Nabbit, as well as two variations of Toad and four colored Yoshis.

To switch characters in Super Mario Wonder, players should press the + button while on the Hub World screen. Once there, they can navigate to the Characters menu on the left. This will take them to the character select screen that appears at the beginning of the game. Players are free to switch characters as many times as they want, with the only limitation being that they cannot change to a different character while in the middle of a course.

In Super Mario Bros. Wonder, there are two distinct groups of characters. The first group consists of Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Yellow Toad, Blue Toad, and Toadette. These characters have the ability to utilize the traditional Mario power-ups, allowing players to fully immerse themselves in the game as the developers intended. Unlike some other Mario games, these characters all handle the same way, although there are slight variances in hitboxes due to variations in their heights.

The second set of individuals includes Yoshi, Red Yoshi, Yellow Yoshi, Light-Blue Yoshi, and Nabbit, and they serve as the game's easy mode. These characters are immune to damage, with Yoshi being temporarily stunned as the only exception. However, Yoshi compensates for this by being able to consume enemies, execute his signature flutter jump, and even carry other characters on his back, making him an excellent choice for multiplayer gameplay.

Although Nabbit is not playable or capable of flutter jumping, he possesses an exceptional ability to withstand damage. Consequently, players who control Nabbit can effortlessly maneuver through the stage without fear of encountering enemies. The drawback, however, is that neither Nabbit nor Yoshi can utilize traditional power-ups, resulting in a missed opportunity to experience the thrilling Elephant transformation. Despite this setback, players will still be able to enjoy the effects of the Wonder Flower, so it's not entirely unfavorable.
