In Final Fantasy 16, players can indulge in numerous intriguing side quests alongside the main storyline. Progressing through the main quest unlocks additional side quests; however, not all of them originate from interactions with NPCs. One such example is the Payback side quest, which can only be initiated by examining the Reading Table in Clive's Chambers and accepting it from there.
Upon Clive's completion of all three Letting Off Steam sub-objectives as part of the Out of the Shadow main quest, the Payback side quest in Final Fantasy 16 becomes accessible. Successfully finishing this side quest awards Clive with a Curiosity, a distinct item that is essential for unlocking the For the Hoard trophy.
How To Start Payback In Final Fantasy 16
To initiate the Payback side quest in Final Fantasy 16, Clive must interact with his Reading Table and choose the "Off the Record" option. This action will trigger the opening of a letter from Gaute, who urgently seeks Clive's help with certain ledgers. Once Clive accepts the quest, he can proceed to The Mess and personally meet Gaute there.
Deliver The Star Ruby To Martha
Upon speaking with Gaute, Clive is informed about an unfortunate oversight that has resulted in The Hideaway owing Martha, Isabelle, and Charon five million Gil each. However, Otto steps in with a solution, providing Clive with two Star Rubies and assigning him the task of delivering one to Martha and another to Isabelle. Meanwhile, Gaute will be responsible for delivering the third Star Ruby to Charon.
In order to deliver a Star Ruby to Martha, Clive will need to use fast-travel to reach Martha's Rest. Once there, he should make his way to The Golden Stables. Inside the establishment, Martha can be found standing behind the bar. Clive can then approach her and interact with her to hand over the Star Ruby.
Deliver The Star Ruby To Isabelle
Martha adamantly refuses to accept it, as she firmly believes that the worth of the star ruby surpasses the amount she had initially lent to The Hideaway. As the conversation concludes, the quest's objective to "Deliver the Star Ruby to Martha" will automatically fade away, indicating its successful completion.
For the delivery of the second Star Ruby, Clive has the option to utilize fast-travel to reach Northreach. From there, he can proceed northward through the castle's gates and continue along the northeastern road towards The Veil. Isabelle can be found standing outside The Veil, where Clive can interact with her. Initially, she declines accepting the Star Ruby, but changes her mind once Clive mentions Cid.
How To Complete Payback In Final Fantasy 16
Upon returning to The Hideaway, Clive quickly goes back to The Mess to inform Gaute about the situation. He discovers that Charon had declined Gaute's request to take the Star Ruby, prompting Clive to take matters into his own hands.
Clive retraces his steps to the Boarding Deck and proceeds north to the Main Deck. After scouting the area, he locates Charon positioned near The Black Hammer's stall on the right side. As Clive engages with her, Charon initially rejects his offer but eventually relents after his insistence. The scene concludes, transporting Clive back to The Mess. Otto expresses his approval for Clive's successful delivery of the Star Rubies.
Following a heartfelt cutscene that delves into the friendship between Cid and Otto, Clive is rewarded with 25 Wyrrite, 50 Sharp Fangs, and 1 Meteorite. These valuable resources can be utilized for crafting and enhancing equipment. Additionally, Clive obtains Cid's Goblet, a unique item of interest that can be examined at The Wall of Memories within Clive's Chambers.
