A Necromancer from China has achieved a remarkable feat in Diablo 4 by becoming the first player to obtain The Grandfather. While it is possible to create powerful endgame builds in Diablo 4 without relying on the six super rare Uniques, obtaining one of these items greatly enhances a character's power and cannot be overlooked. Unlike the balanced tiers of Legendary items in Diablo 3, Diablo 4 follows a philosophy similar to games like Path of Exile, where it offers Uniques that surpass the regular Legendaries in terms of strength.
These highly sought-after "Chase Uniques" in Diablo 4 are exceedingly difficult to acquire, and Lead Class Designer Adam Jackson has previously shared a list of the six rarest items that currently sit at the bottom of the loot pool. While some fans have expressed concerns about the extreme rarity of these items, it has also added to the excitement of the chase before Diablo 4 officially enters its seasonal content phase.
Two lucky players have obtained two instances of Harlequin Crest and also managed to get an Andariel's Visage and a Doombringer. This is the fifth time that a Chase Unique has been dropped in the world. Although The Grandfather is particularly sought after by Whirlwind Barbarian builds, all five classes in Diablo 4 benefit greatly from its high stat rolls. Icy-Heat7531 obtained The Grandfather from a Helltide cache, and _0neTwo_ provided an unofficial translation of the original Chinese tooltips.
Currently, there are only two remaining Chase Uniques that have not been found: the Ring of the Starless Skies and the Melted Heart of Selig. Unfortunately, one downside of Diablo 4's itemization is that even the rarest Uniques can have terrible attributes. The majority of rolls tend to prioritize Cooldown Reduction, Vulnerable, or Skill Ranks, making most rolls useless as upgrades. While this makes sense for normal Uniques and Legendaries, Diablo 4 players believe that Chase Uniques should be exceptions to this rule, considering their rarity.
The Grandfather is an iconic weapon in all Diablo games, and its presence in Diablo 4 lives up to its predecessors. In consideration of Diablo 4's seasonal content format, it is possible that the developers are holding back on Chase Uniques. They may intend to either increase the drop rates or introduce new items like Azurewrath in future seasons. However, it is concerning that only five players have obtained these Uniques since Diablo 4's release nearly a month ago. Extrapolating this to a full season, it would only average out to 15 lucky players, which feels disproportionate considering the game's thriving population.
Diablo 4 is available on various platforms including PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
