Origins

The Shunkō technique, created by the brilliant Yoruichi Shihōin, is an incredibly destructive technique that was once used to overpower Soi-Fon herself. What exactly is the Shunkō technique, and can it serve as a formidable replacement for a stolen Bankai? Here, we unveil the explanation behind Soi-Fon's formidable new trump card.

In the BLEACH universe, the Shunkō is not a new concept. It was initially introduced by Soi-Fon during her confrontation with her former master, Yoruichi Shihōin, in the Soul Society arc. Soi-Fon's arrogance was evident as she believed she had invented the technique. However, Yoruichi had already perfected it, establishing herself as the true creator of the Shunkō technique. This advanced technique combines hand-to-hand combat with spell-based Kido, two fundamental elements of Shinigami combat: Hakuda and Kidō. Soi-Fon and Yoruichi, both being Captains of the Onmitsukidō (Covert Ops) branch of the Gotei 13, possess exceptional mastery in hand-to-hand combat. To perform the Shunkō, the user channels a significant amount of Reiatsu into their arms and legs, providing them with immense speed and strength. This energy manifests as powerful gusts of wind, although Yoruichi's version showcases lightning instead.

During their altercation in the early stages of the BLEACH series, Soi-Fon admitted to having no specific name for the technique she utilized in combat. However, Yoruichi, her former mentor, enlightened her by disclosing the name she had assigned to it. Furthermore, Yoruichi disclosed that the reason their uniforms lacked sleeves was due to the fact that the fabric would be irreparably torn when the technique was activated. In Japanese, the term "Shunkō" is represented by the characters 瞬閧, with the first character "Shun" conveying the concept of "instant" or "instantaneous" and incorporating radicals that symbolize "eye" and "dance", hence associating it with "blink" as well. "The blink of an eye" is a widely recognized phrase to describe a fleeting moment, and thus, this initial character represents both literal and symbolic interpretations of immediacy. On the other hand, the second character "-kō" in "Shunkō" translates to "battle cry". Consequently, the "Shunkō" technique derives its name from the swiftness of movement and the resounding noise accompanying its attacks. The execution of this technique also serves as a visual spectacle, effectively conveying a state of readiness for battle.

In BLEACH Thousand-Year Blood War Part 2 Episode 2, the second episode showcases Soi-Fon and Hitsugaya's battles simultaneously. The reason behind this decision is that both Captains had to regroup and devise new strategies after their Bankai was stolen in the previous storyline. Hitsugaya had to adapt to relying more on his lieutenant, Matsumoto, and getting accustomed to his reduced destructive power. On the other hand, Soi Fon had to revisit the fundamental principles of her combat style after losing Jakuhō Raikōben. This resulted in the creation of the immensely powerful Shunkō technique, which she employed during her rematch against BG9.

Yoruichi's Shunkō

Prior to her rematch, Soi-Fon became skilled in the principle of Shunkō, a technique that she uncovered after her battle against Yoruichi. This technique, known as Mukyū Shunkō or "Infinite Shunkō," allows her to continuously generate and control her reiatsu, creating an everlasting whirlwind of spiritual energy around her. Soi-Fon's mastery of this technique enables her movements to be almost instantaneous, enabling her to swiftly close large distances between herself and her mechanical adversary. The ferocity of her attacks, combined with her incredible speed, produces explosive impacts. However, despite her initial advantage, the robot quickly analyzed and incorporated Soi-Fon's newfound power into its memory, matching her agility effortlessly, thereby nullifying any chance she had of victory.

Yoruichi Shunko – BLEACH

As previously mentioned, this technique can take the form of either wind or lightning, with the latter being Yoruichi's preferred choice. However, what remains undisclosed in the anime is Yoruichi's own advancement of this concept, as displayed by Soi-Fon's Mukyū Shunkō. Going beyond the fundamental idea, Yoruichi elevates Shunkō to new heights, showcasing various manifestations of her spiritual energy while keeping the electrifying current flowing seamlessly. One remarkable application, known as Shunkō: Raijin Senkei ("Thunder God Battle Form"), transforms Yoruichi's lightning-infused Shunkō into the drums of Raijin, the thunder deity from Japanese mythology. With a commanding gesture, Yoruichi releases an overpowering pillar of electricity that overwhelms her adversaries. Additionally, Yoruichi possesses a final trump card that surpasses this advanced level of Shunkō.
