Fortunately, similar to its predecessors in the Classic Sonic series, Sonic Superstars offers the choice to play solo, making co-op optional. While the game places emphasis on its diverse cast as a unified entity, the storyline and core concept revolve around the themes of friendship and teamwork. This aligns seamlessly with the co-op feature. Furthermore, Sonic Superstars takes it a step further by ensuring that each character receives equal attention and spotlight within the single-player experience through various means.

Single Player Sonic Superstars Fans Won't Be Going Solo

In Sonic Superstars, the main campaign is presented through Story Mode. Players will navigate through 11 stages, each with their own acts to complete. As players make their way through various obstacles and enemies, they may come across surprising appearances from other playable characters. One act even features a surprise visit from Trip the Sungazer.

This attention to detail adds a nice touch to the game and maintains consistency in the overall story. According to the game's lore, Sonic and his friends join forces to protect the Northstar Islands from Dr. Eggman and Fang the Hunter. This is reflected in the different character endings, which vary depending on which character the player defeats the final boss with. Each animated cutscene showcases a number of Sonic's friends. These background segments are unique to the character the player chooses, so Knuckles players will see Tails and Sonic battling robots in one act, while Sonic players will encounter Knuckles at the beginning of one of the shorter stages in Sonic Superstars.

Sonic Superstars' Character Acts Round Out the Roster

In the 2D Classic Sonic games, players typically choose one character for the entire playthrough. However, Sonic Superstars breaks this tradition by allowing fans to play as any character whenever they want. This unique feature allows players to tackle obstacles in different ways depending on the character's abilities. In later stages, players are limited to one character, but they should have already had enough practice with each character by then.

Sonic Superstars' stages also introduce a new element called "character acts" in Story Mode. These acts automatically switch players to the character assigned to that stage, giving them a chance to experience different play styles. While these acts are optional, they offer rewards such as Special Stage rings and contribute to the game's overall story, making it worthwhile to try out new characters.
