The Fist of the North Star manga was created by Buronson (story) and Tetsuo Hara (art). It made its debut in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 1983 and ran for 27 volumes until August 1988. A spin-off series, Fist of the North Star Apocalypse Drama Filming Arc, by Hiroshi Kurao was published on the Comic Zenon website and consisted of only one volume released in February 2021.

Starting in June 2021, VIZ Media began publishing hardcover volumes of the manga. The anime adaptation of the series was produced by Toei Animation and aired a total of 152 episodes from October 1984 to February 1988. In 1995, a live-action film based on the franchise was released. Additionally, a number of videogames have been created, with the most recent being a Fist of the North Star-themed version of Fitness Boxing for the Nintendo Switch.
