Warner Bros. Japan announced a new anime series titled Fist of the North Star: Hokuto no Ken, to commemorate the franchise's 40th anniversary. The announcement, made on September 13, coincides with the exact anniversary of the Fist of the North Star manga debut. Along with the announcement, the series logo and a new key visual were unveiled, indicating that a fresh cast and production team will be involved.

The Fist of the North Star manga was created by Buronson (story) and Tetsuo Hara (art). It made its debut in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 1983 and ran for 27 volumes until August 1988. A spin-off series, Fist of the North Star Apocalypse Drama Filming Arc, by Hiroshi Kurao was published on the Comic Zenon website and consisted of only one volume released in February 2021.

Starting in June 2021, VIZ Media began publishing hardcover volumes of the manga. The anime adaptation of the series was produced by Toei Animation and aired a total of 152 episodes from October 1984 to February 1988. In 1995, a live-action film based on the franchise was released. Additionally, a number of videogames have been created, with the most recent being a Fist of the North Star-themed version of Fitness Boxing for the Nintendo Switch.

Fist of the North Star, with its impressive sales of over 100 million copies, has established itself as one of the best-selling manga of all time. This iconic series holds a significant place in the revered "Golden Age" of Shonen Jump magazine, leaving an indelible mark on the manga industry. Notably, it has served as a substantial source of inspiration for other noteworthy titles such as Kentaro Miura's Berserk and Makoto Yukimura's Vinland Saga.

To emphasize the immense importance of Fist of the North Star, an exhibition is being held in Hokuto City, Hokkaido, to commemorate the franchise's 40th anniversary. The exhibition, which started in August and will continue until the end of October, pays homage to the post-apocalyptic world depicted in the story. Set in the mysterious year of 199X, ravaged by nuclear war, the narrative follows Kenshiro, who reluctantly inherits a dangerous martial art but desires a peaceful existence. However, his arch-nemesis, Shin, kidnaps Kenshiro's fiancée, Yuria, disrupting his plans. As Kenshiro roams the desolate wasteland, he employs his strength to protect the defenseless from marauders. Unfortunately, news of his heroic endeavors spreads quickly, capturing the attention of warlords, formidable martial artists, and individuals from his past.
