Defeating Ultimalius in Final Fantasy 16
Even though the destruction of the last Mothercrystal didn't halt Ultima's plans in the previous main scenario quest, a new obstacle emerges unexpectedly. Origin, a massive floating crystal, appears in the sky, leaving Clive and his allies puzzled about its purpose. However, they are certain that it bodes ill. "Back to Their Origin" serves as the penultimate quest in Final Fantasy 16's main scenario.
Proceed with caution as this short quest combines with the final main scenario quest "Of Gods and Men", which is essentially the ultimate battle against Ultima. Players can anticipate what lies ahead as they embark on the last two main scenario quests of Final Fantasy 16. Please note that this walkthrough includes major spoilers.
Talk to Otto
Speak with Otto to initiate a cutscene where Clive and his team hold a crucial meeting about how to handle the floating crystal summoned by Ultima. After the meeting, locate Joshua and engage in conversation. Subsequently, find Jill and interact with her to trigger another cutscene. Following this, the objective will update and prompt players to journey to Origin.
Considering that this will lead to the ultimate battle in Final Fantasy 16, players should ensure they are fully prepared. Obtain any necessary supplies from Charon, particularly the Last Elixir. Blackthorne offers some new armor that provides significant upgrades if players haven't obtained any Ouroboros gear. Additionally, it may be wise for players to craft the Gotterdammerung during this time if they haven't already done so.
In addition to acquiring endgame gear, players can also take on some last minute side quests by obtaining them from the reading table. Two such quests are "More than Words" and "An Inconvenient Truth". Once players have made enough preparations, they should open the map and travel to Origin. After a series of cutscenes, a boss fight will commence.
How to Beat Ultima
The Epic Clash Against Ultima PrimeAfter the cutscene concludes, proceed towards the doorway. Continue progressing until another cutscene is triggered. As soon as it concludes, the ultimate battle commences. Players need to be wary of Ultima's Flare spell. To avoid getting hit, it is crucial to retreat as far away from Ultima as possible. Additionally, Ultima will unleash Holy, which generates a circular shape on the ground with multiple lines emanating from it. To prevent incurring any damage, it is imperative to steer clear of this formation.
Once Ultima's health reaches 60%, the battle enters its second phase. Ultima will start flying around the arena, launching projectiles at players. It is important to evade these projectiles and then quickly move in for an attack. During this phase, Ultima will cast its signature ability, Ultima. Although evading this attack can be challenging, it does not inflict significant damage. Additionally, Ultima will occasionally unleash Meteor, which can be avoided by staying clear of the red circles that materialize on the ground.
Even as Ultima's health reaches zero, the battle is far from over. Frustrated by the unfavorable outcome, Ultima undergoes a powerful transformation, becoming Ultima Risen. Engage in a Cinematic Clash sequence, where players will assume the form of Ifrit. Within this climactic Eikon battle, prioritize evading Ultima's onslaught while capitalizing on opportunities to counterattack amidst his assaults. Upon Ultima's health dwindling to 50%, brace yourself for the Rapture spell. Focus on evading this devastating attack and promptly resume your offensive once it subsides.
As the battle progresses, Ultima will unleash an ability with a purple bar. It is important to maintain an aggressive approach while also staying prepared to dodge, as Ultima will continue to attack while charging up for a devastating assault. Shortly after, a countdown will initiate and players must quickly deplete the bar before it reaches completion. Once successfully interrupted, Ultima will once again unleash the Rapture. Evade this attack and resume the fight. In due time, Ultima will cast Pulsar, sending forth a wave of beams in a circular pattern. Whenever possible, evade this attack while continuing to unleash your own offensive strikes. Keep up the relentless onslaught until Ultima's health is depleted down to zero once again.
How to Beat Ultimalius
Just like in traditional Final Fantasy games, the final boss undergoes multiple transformations. Cornered and desperate, Ultima morphs once again into a formidable entity known as Ultimalius. The primary offensive move of Ultimalius involves creating circles on the ground which explode after a few seconds. Stay vigilant of your surroundings during the battle to avoid getting caught in the explosion. Additionally, when Ultimalius triggers Heaven's Embrace, be prepared to swiftly dodge his charging attack.
Periodically, Ultimalius will unleash Cataclysm, summoning a circle that will send an array of towering rock pillars soaring into the air. Gradually expanding in size, the circle will then advance outward, edging closer to the arena. Stay cautious and await the dissipation of the initial circle before cautiously maneuvering towards the boss, ensuring you remain unscathed.
As Ultimalius's health reaches 70%, a series of Cinematic Clashes will occur, intensifying the fight. Once this second phase begins, Ultimalius will unleash Exaflare, emitting a powerful beam directly ahead. Skillfully avoid this attack and swiftly position yourself for a counterattack. Following this, be prepared for the consecutive onslaught of Boreal Rhaphsody and Severance, both of which are relatively easy to evade. Ultimalius will subsequently chain these abilities together, leaving players with minimal maneuvering space.
As the battle progresses and Ultimalius reaches the 50% mark, another series of Cinematic Clashes ensues. At this stage, Ultimalius becomes enraged and unleashes a devastating Limit Break, marking the commencement of phase three. Throughout this phase, Ultimalius will employ most of the abilities previously seen in phase one. However, as Ultimalius starts to sustain significant damage, he will conjure the Flames of Creation. It is important to note that he will be positioned too far away to inflict substantial harm, so your main priority should be evading the enormous blue meteor that descends upon the battlefield.
Once Ultiamalius reaches 15% health, prepare for another thrilling Cinematic Clash before the battle resumes. Defeat him and trigger a final Cinematic Clash to achieve victory over Ultimalius. Well done on conquering Final Fantasy 16!
Now, all that remains is to relax and savor the ending. After the credits conclude, players will be given the choice to save their clear data and embark on a fresh playthrough at a higher difficulty level, should they desire a new and more challenging experience.
