The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me is a game that revolves around making difficult choices. The storyline follows a group of five main characters who must navigate the challenges of being pursued by a serial killer with a slasher-style approach. The ultimate fate of these characters heavily relies on the decisions made by the player throughout the game.
In The Devil in Me, players have the opportunity to earn various achievements and trophies, one of which is called the Handy trophy. To obtain this trophy, players must locate all fourteen inventory items scattered throughout the game. However, it's important to note that these items are often mutually exclusive, meaning that players can only choose one item over another in certain scenes. Consequently, unlocking the Handy trophy will require multiple playthroughs. Furthermore, the method for achieving this particular milestone differs between the Theatrical Cut and the Curator's Cut versions of the game.
The World's Fair Hotel
Theatrical Cut: Rose Milk/Face Powder
In the prologue scene of Theatrical Cut, players have the opportunity to discover two items: Rose Milk and Face Powder. After Holmes departs, leaving Marie and Jeff by themselves, Marie will approach the pharmacy counter. At this point, she will be presented with a choice to opt for either the Rose Milk or the Face Powder. While it is not possible to obtain both items simultaneously, players can redo the scene to collect the item they initially missed.
Curator’s Cut: Pocket Watch/Necklace
The Curator's Cut of the Devil in Me introduces a slightly altered prologue compared to the Theatrical Cut. Notably, one of the key distinctions lies in the assortment of items available for players to discover. In this rendition of the scene, the character Jeff is presented with the option to purchase either a Pocket Watch or a Necklace. However, it remains imperative for players to note that they are still unable to acquire both items simultaneously, thereby necessitating a replay of the prologue in order to explore the alternate choice.
Blackout (Theatrical Cut): Inhaler
In the chapter Blackout, Erin becomes unexpectedly trapped inside a pitch-black room while experiencing an asthma attack. As the other characters desperately attempt to free her or locate her inhaler, the tension in the room intensifies. Suddenly, an unexpected turn of events occurs when a hidden wall glides open, revealing the presence of the mysterious killer. Stepping towards Erin, he extends his hand, offering her an inhaler. At this critical moment, Erin faces a pivotal decision - she can either choose to accept the inhaler or launch an attack. To progress the game, it is highly recommended for players to select the option for Erin to cautiously take hold of the offered inhaler. This action will successfully add the inhaler to their inventory.
Wall (Theatrical Cut): Amethyst Crystal
Party (Curator’s Cut): Lounge Key
The scene commences with Kate rummaging through her bag anxiously, only to breathe a sigh of relief upon finding her cherished Amethyst Crystal tucked inside. Mark takes the opportunity to mock her for possessing it. This inevitably leads to a heated argument between the two. Kate faces a choice - she can either leave her crystal on the desk, succumbing to the pressure, or she can stand her ground and retain possession of it. Opting for the latter allows her to keep the crystal and retrieve it later in the chapter.
Separated from her team, Jamie navigates through the hallways of her confined predicament. In her exploration, she stumbles upon a door leading to the lounge, but to her dismay, it appears to be securely locked. To gain access, players will require a key, but they need not venture far. Advancing further, until Jamie discovers the staff room, the next course of action involves opening the closet door. Unexpectedly, a mannequin tumbles out, startling Jamie as it lands upon her. Once she gathers herself, Jamie cautiously examines the contents of the closet, where she discovers the coveted Lounge Key concealed within its depths.
The Party chapter is only found in the Curator’s Cut of The Devil in Me.
Workshop: Camera Lens & Drill Bit
The workshop begins with Mark unexpectedly falling through a vent. However, he is fortunate enough to be saved from a fatal fall when his camera's strap gets caught on the vent. Mark hangs precariously for a moment before finally dropping to the ground. Unfortunately, his camera is lost in the process. Players have the opportunity to complete a Quick Time Event (QTE) to try and catch the camera. It is crucial to succeed in catching it, as the camera will later be needed to collect specific inventory items.
After safely landing, Mark finds himself in a room filled with jail cells. He thoroughly investigates the room before moving on. The next room is filled with shelves, and upon closer inspection, Mark discovers a Camera Lens on top of one of the shelves. He can retrieve it only if he still has his camera. Additionally, Mark also comes across a Drill Bit conveniently placed on a nearby table.
Interrogation: Lip Balm
In Interrogation, Jamie finds herself confined within the corridors concealed behind the reflective surfaces of the hotel. Upon her successful escape, she gains the opportunity to venture into the living quarters of the crew. During this exploration, players can discover the Lip Balm item in Erin's room, exactly on the floor. If Jamie and Erin shared a kiss in Guests and Erin is still alive, Jamie can opt to retain the item.
Director’s Suite: Screwdriver
Theatrical Cut
In the enhanced version of the Director's Suite's Theatrical Cut, players assume control of Kate while she collaborates with Jamie to ensnare the relentless murderer. Throughout their interaction, Kate and Jamie engage in a conversation wherein it comes to light that Jamie possesses a screwdriver. In a defining moment, players are empowered to decide which character will retain possession of this indispensable tool. Opting for Kate to secure the screwdriver becomes crucial as it becomes her lifeline for navigating the impending perilous trap.
Curator's Cut
Cliffside (Alternative Version): Camera Lens
In the Curator’s Cut, the player assumes control of Jamie who, during a conversation with Kate, opts to retain possession of the screwdriver. In a later scene, both characters find themselves confronted with a trap consisting of a glass wall moving towards Kate. Jamie, in a position to take action, is able to reverse the glass's direction by pressing a button. Without offering any apologies, Jamie swiftly shatters the glass using the screwdriver, ensuring the survival of both characters.
Homestead: Flashlight
Cliffside usually accompanies Mark and Charlie, except in the case where Charlie is deceased. In this alternative scenario, players stick with Mark as he endeavors to make his way to the lighthouse. Along his journey, he stumbles upon a cabin. Venture inside and meticulously examine the desk. Within one of the drawers, you will discover a Camera Lens. The focal point of Homestead revolves around Jamie and Kate's exploration of a rustic farmhouse and its accompanying shed. Within the shed, players have the opportunity to discover a Flashlight. Although the structure is initially secured, players can retrieve the key discreetly positioned towards the rear of the shed. Upon gaining access, diligent exploration should encompass examining the vicinity surrounding the lifeless figure, whereby the flashlight will be invariably found adjacent to it.
Lake: Pepper Spray
In the concluding chapter of the Devil in Me, Lake, players assume control of the remaining characters as they face their ultimate showdown with the killer. This stage is where players can come across the valuable Pepper Spray inventory item. In order to obtain it, Mark must swiftly retrieve it from the officer's possession during the killer's assault.
