Though the series only lasted two seasons and concluded on a cliffhanger, its characters and costumes left a lasting impression on Saturday morning viewers. While Flabber himself was not a Beetleborg, he played a significant role in the series.

Flabber, one of the creatures residing in Hillhurst Mansion known as a phantasm, remains trapped within a pipe organ until the three children accidentally stumble upon it and manage to play the precise notes that set him free. Unlike the other monsters dwelling in Hillhurst, Flabber possesses a kind-hearted nature and willingly grants the trio's wish to transform them into Beetleborgs. With a distinct appearance, boasting a prominent chin akin to Jay Leno, Elvis Presley-esque hair, and an extravagant ensemble reminiscent of Liberace, Flabber stands out as a captivating figure. As the leader of Hillhurst, he diligently manages and ensures the other monsters refrain from attacking the Beetleborgs.

Flabber proves to be a steadfast ally to the Beetleborgs, often offering them valuable advice and guidance throughout their endeavors against various monsters. Moreover, he possesses impressive spellcasting abilities; however, his playful demeanor often leads to his spells backfiring. In fact, it is his spell that unintentionally releases monsters from the comic book realm into reality while granting the children their Beetleborg powers. Similar to Alpha 5 in Power Rangers, Flabber assumes a parallel role, yet his distinctive style, sense of humor, and formidable powers establish him as a truly one-of-a-kind character, leaving a lasting impression within the realm of children's superheroes.

The Original Flabber Looked Very Different

Michael R. Gotto, known for his role as young Tommy Oliver, the Green Ranger, in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, recently shared some interesting insights in a Facebook post. According to Gotto, he was originally intended to appear in Big Bad Beetleborgs, with a significantly different portrayal of the character Flabber. Instead of the Elvis-inspired specter he eventually became, this earlier version of Flabber had carrot-orange hair, a prominent nose, and an oversized striped blazer. Gotto included photos from a pilot presentation, clarifying that this is distinct from a full pilot episode. Pilot presentations typically consist of around 10 minutes of footage and are mainly used by studios to assess the potential success of a show.

Gotto's post further revealed that he ultimately did not land the role of Drew in Big Bad Beetleborgs. Studio executives were concerned that young viewers would mistake him for Tommy, causing confusion. While it is true that some children may not have fully grasped the distinction between the two characters, many would have had no trouble understanding. Nevertheless, the alterations made to Flabber in Big Bad Beetleborgs were ultimately well-received.
