Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is a spin-off of the Borderlands franchise, combining first-person shooter gameplay with fantasy RPG elements and a tabletop RPG spin.
Gearbox could greatly enhance a potential sequel by incorporating a broader range of spell types and allowing for greater flexibility in spellcasting.
Gearbox's addition to the Borderlands franchise, Borderlands 4, was anticipated by fans in 2021 due to a discernable pattern. However, the developer surprised fans with a spin-off called Tiny Tina's Wonderlands. This tabletop RPG game brought a sense of nostalgia to fans familiar with Dungeons and Dragons games, blending modern first-person shooter and fantasy RPG elements. While spells are limited in the game, the potential for a sequel, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands 2, to take magic to new heights is promising.
Serving as a sequel to Borderlands 2 DLC Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep, players find themselves transported to a table within Tiny Tina's Wonderlands alongside main characters and narrators. The player-character, known as the Fatemaker, can be fully customized using the game's character creator engine, a departure from previous Borderlands games. Players also have the freedom to choose their class and subclass, tailoring their playstyle to their personal preferences. The game begins with a session of Bunkers and Badasses, Borderlands' equivalent to Dungeon and Dragons, with Tiny Tina as the Dungeon Master and the other characters as guides. The adventure takes place in a high fantasy world, with the defeat of the evil Dragon Lord being the ultimate objective.
Magic Has Untapped Potential In Tiny Tina's Wonderlands
In their quest to defeat the Dragon Lord, gamers experience Tiny Tina's Wonderlands from a first-person perspective, similar to previous Borderlands titles. They are equipped with various combat elements, such as guns, class-specific action skills, spellbooks for magic instead of grenades, and melee weapons. The game follows Borderlands' signature procedurally generated loot system, offering players a wide selection of weapons. While guns are typically associated with the Borderlands franchise, the inclusion of magic spells seamlessly fits the fantasy RPG setting of Tiny Tina's Wonderlands.
Magic and spellbooks play a significant role in the gameplay of Tiny Tina's Wonderlands. The game features ten basic spell types, four spellbook manufacturers that determine the casting method, and three levels of rarity. Additionally, the action skills of classes, like the Clawbringers' Cleansing Flames, undergo magical transformations. This skill allows the character to create a massive fire nova by slamming their hammer into the ground. While wielding the power to bring down meteors or impale enemies with ice spikes is impressive, some fans felt that certain aspects of spells and magic could benefit from more refinement, potentially in a sequel.
The Spellshot class's exclusive ability to use multiple spells simultaneously could be expanded in a sequel to allow for new gameplay mechanics. Players would have the opportunity to explore the synergy between different spells, such as combining a shock and frost ability to inflict extra damage or creating combined spell effects to generate powerful enchantments or traps similar to Vigors in BioShock. Additionally, the inclusion of magic that enhances the physical attributes of the character, like the ability to increase size or be surrounded by fire or ice for increased damage, would be a valuable addition.
Steering away from a game focused on guns and embracing a magic-based approach would undoubtedly be a risk for Gearbox. It would mean deviating from their tried-and-tested formula and venturing into uncharted territory. However, taking this risk could lead to compelling outcomes and is necessary for Tiny Tina's Wonderlands to transcend being just another Borderlands spin-off.
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
