Renowned overclocker Allen 'Splave' Golibersuch has set a new world record in GPU overclocking. He successfully overclocked the Asus ROG Matrix GeForce RTX 4090 to over 4GHz, a milestone previously unattainable with any other GPU. To cope with the immense heat generated, liquid nitrogen was used for cooling, a typical practice in the world of overclocking. Splave's achievement followed closely after another overclocker managed to reach 3975 MHz using an RTX 4090 from Colorful.
Although the Asus ROG Matrix GeForce RTX 4090 is not yet available to the general public, professional overclockers have been rigorously testing its capabilities. The GPU comes equipped with an all-in-one liquid cooling system that includes a 360mm radiator. However, in extreme overclocking scenarios, it is common for overclockers to replace the default cooling system with the Kingpin Cooling TEK-9 Icon Extreme GPU pot, designed specifically for use with liquid nitrogen or LN2.
After being put to the test by various overclockers, Allen Golibersuch, famously known as 'Splave,' made history by surpassing the 4GHz threshold, setting an unprecedented world record. The GPUPi 32B 3.3 test was flawlessly completed by the ROG Matrix GeForce RTX 4090 at an impressive frequency of 4005 MHz, while the GPUPi 1B 3.3 test proved successful at 4020 MHz. Ecstatic with the accomplishment, Splave nonchalantly shared his triumph on his Instagram @splaveoc, brushing it off as "No big deal," reaffirming the unchallenged supremacy of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 as the king of consumer graphics cards.

Last week, in the pursuit of surpassing a 4GHz GPU clock speed, Splave achieved a clock speed of 3,945 MHz with the same card. However, his record was surpassed by another overclocker named Cens, who was able to push the Colorful 4090 iGgame Lab to 3975MHz on LN2. Cens shared his accomplishment on Twitter, providing screenshots of CPU-Z, GPU-Z, and GPUPi 3.3.3. Shortly after, Splave announced that he had broken the 4000 MHz barrier with his ROG Matrix GeForce RTX 4090, which now stands as the top choice for RTX 4090 GPU overclocking, even surpassing Asus' own ROG Strix 4090 which was already considered excessive.
For those unfamiliar, GPUPi utilizes the BPP formula to calculate the mathematical constant Pi in parallel, optimizing it for use on CUDA-capable devices to obtain 32 billion and two 1 billion decimal places. These calculations put significant stress on the GPU, resulting in extremely high temperatures, hence the use of liquid nitrogen.
Before the record-breaking clock speed of over 4GHz achieved by the ROG Matrix GeForce RTX 4090, another 4090 held the title. In November of last year, a group of overclockers from Greece known as OGS successfully pushed the GALAX GeForce RTX 4090 HOF graphics card to an impressive 3825 MHz. Breaking the 3GHz barrier happened three years ago with the GALAX GeForce RTX 2080 Ti HOF OCLab Edition graphics card.
