The New Frontier Pass brought 6 new DLC packs to Civilization 6, starting with Maya & Gran Colombia and ending with Portugal. One of the notable DLCs included in the New Frontier Pass was the Vietnam & Kublai Khan Pack, which introduced Bà Triệu of Vietnam and Kublai Khan of China and Mongolia as playable leaders in Civilization 6.

Kublai Khan, the grandson of the renowned Genghis Khan, inherited the mighty Mongolian Empire and dedicated his life to expanding its territories into China. In 1271, he established the Yuan dynasty and proclaimed himself the Emperor of both China and Mongolia. In Civilization 6, Kublai Khan is available as a leader for both China and Mongolia, and his Gerege Leader Ability allows him to excel with either civilization.

How to Play as Chinese Kublai Khan

Unleashing the Ancient Mongol Empire: Mastering Kublai Khan in Civilization 6

The first part of Kublai Khan's Gerege Ability is incredibly valuable as it provides him with an additional Economic Policy Slot in every Civilization 6 Government. This is particularly advantageous for Mongolian Kublai Khan, as he can quickly establish strong Trade Routes and use the extra Economic Policy Slot to enhance their yields right from the Ancient Era. By continuously sending Traders to neighboring lands and City-states, players can gradually increase their Diplomatic Visibility, which in turn boosts the effectiveness of their Keshig armies when they eventually engage in warlike actions similar to those of Genghis Khan himself.

The second part of Gerege perfectly complements this playstyle, as it grants Mongolian Kublai Khan a free Eureka and Inspiration every time he initiates a Trade Route to a new City and acquires the Mongolian instant Trading Post. Through early Trade Routes, players can swiftly progress through the Technology tree and unlock crucial Mongolian Technologies such as Horseback Riding and Stirrups. This allows them to utilize cavalry units to overwhelm their neighboring civilizations before they have a chance to establish proper defenses. Once players have gained dominance over their local area, they can then decide whether to continue their conquests in pursuit of a Civilization 6 Domination Victory or leverage the economic advantage of their expanded lands to focus on Science, Culture, or Diplomacy.

Civilization 6 is available for iOS, Android, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
