Intel is reportedly working on a budget entry-level CPU called "Intel 300" with 2 cores and 4 threads, surprising for a 2023 CPU.
The Intel 300 CPU is reported as the next-generation successor to the Intel Pentium Gold G7400, slated to join the 14th Gen CPU lineup. Intel plans to introduce this new CPU prior to the end of September, possibly announcing it in conjunction with the more widely-used Raptor Lake Refresh lineup.
Intel is reportedly developing a new entry-level dual-core CPU, which deviates from the company's traditional processor naming convention. This CPU is rumored to be named "Intel 300" and is expected to launch in the third quarter of this year. Despite being part of the 14th Gen CPU lineup, it is surprising that this budget-friendly option only offers 2 cores and 4 threads, which is unconventional for a CPU released in 2023. The Intel 300 CPU is said to be the successor to the Intel Pentium Gold G7400, which was introduced in early 2022.
Typically, Intel reserves its entry-level CPUs for the Pentium or Celeron categories, which include chips such as the Pentium Gold G7400 and the Intel Celeron 7305L. The Pentium Gold G7400 features a dual-core design with 2 performance cores and 4 threads, while the Celeron 7305L has a total of 5 cores - 1 performance core and 4 efficiency cores. Both the Celeron chip and the Pentium Gold G7400 belonged to the 12th Gen CPU lineup and did not receive an update or successor in the 13th generation.
According to a recent Twitter leak by tipster chi11eddog, the upcoming CPU that will succeed the Pentium Gold G7400 is rumored to be called "Intel 300." This 14th Generation CPU will feature 2 performance cores, no efficiency cores, and 4 threads. It will have 6MB of L3 cache and a power consumption of 46W, which is likely the base processor power. Notably, the base core clock speed has increased by 200MHz, with the new Intel 300 CPU expected to be clocked at 3.9GHz.
Intel initially introduced its P-core and E-core design with the 12th Gen Alder Lake CPUs in January of the previous year. The Pentium Gold G7400 was released in the first quarter of 2022. While the company chose not to refresh this CPU with the 13th Gen, it is now taking a different approach for the upcoming generation while keeping the core count low, similar to the previous generation. The P-core and E-core design delivered notable performance improvements, particularly for the gaming-oriented CPUs in the lineup.
The release date for the new CPU is expected to be within this quarter, before September ends. Intel is anticipated to unveil its Raptor Lake Refresh lineup of CPUs in October, possibly announcing the Intel 300 CPUs alongside the more mainstream chips. It is important to note that no official information about the new CPU or its release has been shared by the company.
Regarding the Raptor Lake Refresh series, it will not represent a significant advancement compared to the 13th Gen lineup. However, it will offer a minor performance improvement for both the 'K' and 'non-K' SKUs. Intel's current CPU lineup for 2023 delivers exceptional performance, but the 12th-generation, which is often discounted, offers better value compared to the 13th-generation alternatives.
