Liverpool's midfield has finally undergone a much-needed transformation. The departures of Jordan Henderson, James Milner, and Fabinho have left some experience behind. However, the real excitement lies in the potential benefits for Jurgen Klopp's team. The midfield now boasts a dynamic combination of energy and creativity.
Premier League fans are already familiar with Alexis Mac Allister. This World Cup champion not only brings great control to the midfield but also possesses the ability to cover the ground effectively. However, it is the prospect of pairing him with the recently acquired Dominik Szoboszlai that truly captivates.
This £60m acquisition from RB Leipzig introduces something fresh – and perhaps something reminiscent of the past. The original triumph that Klopp achieved at Anfield was founded on a game of tremendous intensity. Szoboszlai, who is only 22 years old, possesses that capacity. "His athleticism is truly unparalleled," confirms Rene Maric to us.

His data consistently shows a strong physical performance. When visually observing his games, it becomes evident that he doesn't indulge in defensive theatrics or embark on solitary 40-meter sprints. However, he continuously demonstrates his commitment by consistently tracking back and emerging victorious in duels.
Maric collaborated with Szoboszlai during his early teenage years at Red Bull Salzburg, witnessing his growth as he made his way to the first-team where the Austrian coach served as Marco Rose's assistant. The foundations of pressing were instilled in the player at a tender age. However, the dedication and work ethic were always present.
"We used to have morning sessions or days off, and while I worked in the office, I would often catch a glimpse of him on the pitch, effortlessly nailing those incredible free-kicks. It's a display of both natural talent and sheer dedication, which speaks volumes about his character.
"When you have known a player since their youth, you anticipate a lot of changes as they grow from teenagers to adults. But witnessing his remarkable physical transformation, and the fact that he has maintained that unique blend of confidence and positivity, is truly commendable."
He has always possessed the belief that he had the potential to reach a world-class level, and now it is evident that he truly considers himself to be there. However, in addition to this self-assuredness, he still displays a genuine enthusiasm for playing football and a strong work ethic. This combination is truly exceptional, in my opinion.
There have already been moments that indicate his potential. He has contributed three goals in pre-season, all from his expertly taken corner kicks. His ability to create danger from set pieces is undeniable. Moreover, he recently showcased his audacity with a daring attempt on goal from near the halfway line during a match against Leicester. It is clear to see that he possesses one of the most impressive ball-striking abilities in the world.
Klopp will be drawn to his ability to break down defenses in unique ways. After the first pre-season match, the Liverpool manager acknowledged that there was excessive reliance on Trent Alexander-Arnold to create opportunities. Szoboszlai possesses that same capability.
Maric states, "His impact will depend on how he is utilized, but his talent is truly exceptional. He excels in ball control and remains a true footballer at heart. This means he is someone who seeks out the ball, with the mentality to solve one-on-one challenges."
The intriguing query of which position Szoboszlai will adopt at Liverpool captures attention. Considering his tendency to drift to the right during his time at Leipzig, juxtaposed with Mac Allister's frequent presence in the left channel's half space, it appeared as if these two individuals were well-suited for those attacking positions.

Klopp made a change in the early pre-season games by deploying Szoboszlai on the left, instead of Mac Allister. Szoboszlai's versatility, being comfortable in wider positions, could be the reason for this switch. This allows Luis Diaz or Diogo Jota to move into central areas. This hybrid role is atypical for a Liverpool midfielder, but Szoboszlai is a good fit. It should enable him to challenge defenders one-on-one and also give him the freedom to come inside and either take shots or make key passes.
Maric believes that Szoboszlai has the ability to excel in that role. According to Maric, while he can play effectively in a one-on-one situation on the wing, it is not his strongest position to simply stay out wide. There are other players better suited for that role, in his opinion.
Maric suggests that Szoboszlai would be better utilized as an inside 10 or as an 8 who can move wide when necessary. By using him in this manner, taking advantage of his talent, potential, and well-rounded skills, he becomes an intriguing prospect.
"He has the exceptional skill to maintain ball control, ensure its constant movement, and facilitate its circulation, even under immense pressure, by effortlessly evading opponents and consistently delivering accurate passes. Initially, I anticipated his transfer to Newcastle; however, Liverpool astutely secured his services. In my view, he is an incredibly valuable acquisition and a testament to Liverpool's shrewd decision-making."
The key lies in the blend. Szoboszlai possesses both the technique to enhance Liverpool's possession game and the physicality to fulfill defensive responsibilities. Previous midfield lineups under Klopp lacked the former, while more recent ones have lacked the latter.
According to Maric, "When he's on form, he can score stunning goals from long range or make clever assists. But even on an off day, he still provides a solid defensive foundation, which is crucial for Liverpool and Klopp's playing style."
Liverpool's long-awaited midfield overhaul has arrived.
