Survival of the Thickest creator Michelle Buteau and lead costume designer Keia Bounds worked hard to create looks to remember.
Bounds exclusively informed us that she approached styling Mavis Beaumont in a strategic manner. Her main aim was to showcase to the world that curvy and plus-sized women have the freedom to wear whatever they desire. She emphasized that they can confidently embrace color, make bold fashion choices, and express their excitement for clothing, all while ensuring that their outfits complement their unique body shapes and complexions.
The show, which debuted on Netflix on July 13, depicts the journey of Mavis, a wardrobe stylist, who decides to end her relationship with her photographer boyfriend due to his infidelity. Following the breakup, Mavis moves out of their shared Manhattan apartment and embarks on a new chapter in her life.

According to Bounds, highlighting the contrast between Tribeca and Brooklyn was crucial. He emphasized that when Mavis resided in Tribeca, her fashion choices featured a sleeker aesthetic, characterized by color blocking and a simplicity in design.
Bounds explained that after the breakup, Mavis started to express herself more boldly. She began wearing vibrant colors, mixing textures and patterns, and experimenting with different metals. This transformation was symbolic of her adapting to the Brooklyn lifestyle and fully immersing herself in it.
Additionally, Bounds emphasized the importance of Mavis wearing unexpected outfits. She wanted to challenge stereotypes and promote body positivity. Curvier women are often confined to certain styles, but Mavis defied expectations by freely expressing her unique sense of style. This is why viewers also see her layering and experimenting with different lengths.

“Michelle herself is very much into fashion. She loves clothes and she loves to try new things,” Bounds shared.
Black designers showcased on the show include Telfar, Fe Noel, Fenty, Brother Vellies, Dungeon Forward, and Haus of Swag. Mavis also donned clothing from inclusive brands like Good American, Bacaal, and Ulla Popken.
Apart from their work on Survival of the Thickest, Bounds, an experienced costumer with over 12 years of experience, has lent their skills to other shows such as BMF, Rap Sh!t, Blindspot, and more. Their aim is to dispel the misconception that styling becomes more challenging with extended sizing.

From a world where women of all sizes need to be dressed, Bounds shares her experience. Working on What Not to Wear early in her career, she was responsible for dressing individuals of every shape and size while immersing herself in their personal stories.
She concluded by saying that she had learned the importance of embracing individuals for who they are, understanding their body types and what they want to accentuate. It is not necessary to view their curves or any other physical aspect as a separate entity or concept. Curvy women appreciate their own curves and do not need to feel like working with them is burdensome. Season 1 of Survival of the Thickest can now be streamed on Netflix.
