Highlights

Sonic Superstars is a new 2D platformer game that is a throwback to the classic Sonic games on the Sega Genesis, focusing on speed and multiplayer co-op.

The game brings back beloved characters such as Sonic, Amy, Tails, and Knuckles, alongside the addition of a new character named Trip. Trip joins forces with the notorious Dr. Eggman and Fang the Hunter, completing the villainous trio. At first, Trip is seen as a feeble and awkward adversary, but as the game unfolds, players witness her evolution into a formidable villain, remaining faithful to the storytelling tradition of the classic Sonic games.

Sega and Sonic Team have released more information about the newest antagonist in Sonic Superstars, Trip. Working alongside Dr. Eggman and Fang the Hunter, Trip adds a fresh element to this throwback 2D platformer on the Sega Genesis. Unlike previous installments, Sonic Superstars emphasizes multiplayer co-op, allowing four players to simultaneously join in the action. Sonic, Amy, Tails, and Knuckles are all playable characters, while Trip, a brand-new character introduced specifically for this game, brings her unique presence to the franchise.

Drawing inspiration from classic Sonic games, Sonic Superstars features the iconic versions of Sonic, his friends, and Dr. Eggman. Fang the Hunter, known for his appearances in Sonic Triple Trouble, makes a triumphant return from his comic book and cameo-only history. Designed by the original character designer of Sonic, Naoto Ohshima, Trip makes her debut as a member of the villainous trio, adding excitement and intrigue to the game. Sonic Team's Takashi Iizuka also shared additional details about Trip and what players can anticipate from her.

According to an interview with Game Informer, Iizuka and Ohshima collaborated on the design of Trip for Sonic Superstars. Ohshima, who is the president of co-developer Arzest, worked alongside Sonic Team to create this new character. Trip was introduced as a complement to the franchise's omnipresent villain, Eggman, and the classic villain, Fang, who made a triumphant return. The design process involved Ohshima and Iizuka exchanging ideas for the armored villain, drawing inspiration from the ouroboros. Iizuka explained that Trip is a sungazer lizard, known as an "armored lizard" in Japanese, which aligns with her lizard-like tail and armor.

Unlike other antagonists in Sonic the Hedgehog, Trip doesn't pose a threat to the entire world like the villains in games such as Sonic Adventure, Sonic Unleashed, or Sonic Frontiers. Instead, she is portrayed as a vulnerable and lost character in Superstars. During an interview, it was mentioned that Trip is encountered in one of Amy's Acts in Lagoon City Zone, where she is assisted in leaving the level. Iizuka, the game developer, commented that Trip starts off as a clumsy enemy, hence her name, but as the game progresses, players will witness her transformation into a formidable villain, while staying consistent with the storytelling style of the classic games.

Since her appearance in the opening title animation of Sonic Superstars, fans have been speculating about the role Trip will play in the game. Some fans believe she could potentially be a new playable character, while others think she might surpass Eggman and Fang in some way. It is possible that Trip may become playable after completing Superstars, but currently, this remains mere speculation.

Sonic Superstars launches in Fall 2023 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
