Square Enix is set to release a new game in the beloved Dragon Quest franchise this September, showing that the company hasn't forgotten about one of its biggest franchises. Since its debut in 1986, the Dragon Quest series has amassed 11 mainline releases, as well as numerous spinoffs, manga, anime, and novel adaptations. While not as well-known in the west as Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest still boasts a dedicated fanbase and impressive sales figures. The most recent mainline installment, Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age, has shipped over six million copies to date and received positive reviews from both critics and fans. Fans are eagerly anticipating news about the upcoming Dragon Quest 12.

Square Enix has recently announced the upcoming release of Infinity Strash: Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai, the third installment in the Dragon Quest spinoff series based on the popular manga serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump from 1989 to 1986. While its predecessor, Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai - Xross Blade, was a 2020 Japan-only arcade card game, and Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai: A Hero's Bonds was released worldwide on mobile devices in 2021, Infinity Strash will be a multi-platform console and PC release set to launch on September 28 and has already been rated by the ESRB as a Teen-Rated RPG. Preorders are available on all platforms except for the Switch, with preorders for Nintendo's console set to go live at "a later date." The question remains whether Infinity Strash will satisfy impatient fans who are eagerly awaiting news on the release of Dragon Quest 12.

Square Enix has been accused of playing it safe with the mainline Dragon Quest games, but it appears that the developer is taking more risks with the game mechanics in its spinoff titles. Infinity Strash features multiple playable characters, real-time combat, and epic boss battles. Square Enix promises a deep narrative that covers the first 41 episodes of the anime, hinting at the possibility of a sequel. Infinity Strash: Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai will be released on September 28, 2023 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X.
