Google's Search Generative Experience (SGA) now offers the ability to generate AI images based on search queries. Similar to Bing's image functionality, users can simply enter a prompt like "draw a chicken in the style of Van Gogh" into Google Search and receive four AI-generated images. To access this feature, users must opt into SGA through Search Labs.
This intuitive feature allows users to generate AI images seamlessly. For those who utilize Google as their default search engine, they can simply input a prompt into the address bar and instantly receive results. There is no need for a dedicated webpage or subscription, and in some cases, users don't even need to come up with a clever prompt. If Google detects that users are searching for photos, artistic inspiration, or anything that may benefit from AI-generated images, it will prompt them to generate images. Additionally, users may come across a "Generate" button within Google Images results.
Google is likely utilizing their Imagen text-to-image model to accomplish this feature. However, it's important to note that Imagen and DALL-E are not the same. Therefore, it could be beneficial to switch between Google Search and Bing for generating AI images. It is possible that one model performs better for certain prompts or styles compared to the other. Microsoft recently introduced DALL-E 3 image generation in Bing Chat and the Bing Image Creator, but it is not yet available in regular web search, which is what Google is aiming to achieve here.
Google Search now has the ability to generate written drafts based on your search prompt, in addition to its image-generation functionality. Simply enter a prompt like "write a resignation letter" and you can modify the draft before importing it into Google Docs or Gmail.
It should be noted that these new AI tools are subject to Google's strict usage policy. Google will prevent the creation of "harmful or misleading content" and will attach identifying metadata to all AI-generated images. Although the promised About this Image tool is still being developed, you can test out Google Search's AI features by opting into SGA through Search Labs. Please note that this option is only available on the Chrome browser or the Google app on iOS and Android.
