Combat in Honkai: Star Rail revolves around the teams that players can assemble. By carefully choosing the right units, players can effortlessly overcome any challenge in the game. The key lies in finding the perfect synergy between characters, resulting in devastating damage numbers and incredibly powerful interactions.
Forming a team in Honkai: Star Rail heavily relies on the luck of the player. Not everyone has access to the best characters in the game's roster. However, the free-to-play units available in the game possess the ability to conquer almost any obstacle. Here, we present four team compositions consisting entirely of free-to-play units that any player can create.
The Ol' Reliable
Updated by Marc Santos on October 13, 2023: With the continuous expansion of Honkai: Star Rail's roster of playable characters, the potential for powerful team compositions grows as well. Since the game's release, three new 4-star characters have been introduced, each one bringing a shift to the meta of the game's top teams. Additionally, new characters are being regularly added. This guide has been revised to feature the new 4-star characters and the teams they synergize with, and will be consistently updated in the future with the introduction of more characters. This is the standard team composition all players should be familiar with. It consists of:
One tank
One DPS
One flex pick
One healer
Players can achieve considerable success with this team composition if they employ sound strategies. This traditional RPG lineup offers great flexibility in terms of character selections. The initial trio comprising of Dan Heng, March 7th, and Physical Trailblazer can effortlessly conquer the story content of Honkai: Star Rail, as well as the majority of the lower levels in Forgotten Hall and Simulated Universe.
The Double Tank Setup
As its name suggests, this team setup relies on using two tanks that can share enemy aggro with each other. It's composed of:
Fire Trailblazer
March 7th
There are only two tanks available for free in Honkai: Star Rail, namely March and Fire Trailblazer. The notable aspect is that both of them excel in their role.
The Hyper Carry Crew
This composition provides a high degree of flexibility in terms of damage options. The remaining two slots can accommodate any other character, and since the tanks offer ample protection for the entire team, having a healer is purely optional unless players find themselves involved in a prolonged boss battle. Depending on the specific enemy matchup, either March or Fire Trailblazer can also serve as a dedicated Weakness Breaker, while the over assumes the responsibilities of the original tank.Using a hyper-carry team is always risky, but it can pay off if players manage their units properly. An example of this using F2P characters would be something like:
Dan Heng
Tingyun
Asta
A tank or healer
In this case, Asta and Tingyun will primarily focus on providing Dan Heng with sufficient buffs to effectively remove significant portions of an enemy's health bar. Bronya is the most suitable support unit for this team composition, as she replaces Asta's SPD boosts with ATK and CRIT DMG buffs that synergize well with Tingyun's abilities.
The final slot can be occupied by either a tank or a healer. In most instances, March 7th or Fire Trailblazer with the 3-star Defense Light Cone is adequate for this role. They possess the ability to break Toughness Bars while also replenishing their own HP through their ultimate abilities, allowing the rest of the team more flexibility to execute their powerful one-shot combos. Alternatively, Pela can also fill this slot, as she has the ability to reduce the DEF of enemies, amplifying the damage inflicted by Dan Heng even further.
The Elation Meme Team
The team is specifically created for the Simulated Universe, focusing on utilizing ultimate abilities and follow-up attacks to achieve incredibly high damage numbers. The team members are listed below:
Date: March 7th
Herta
One ST DPS unit
This team shows minimal concern for elemental weaknesses. As long as players obtain Slaughterhouse No. 4, alongside either Auto-Harmonica or Champion's Dinner: Cat's Cradle, they can effortlessly overpower almost any obstacle with sheer strength. Additionally, when combined with the Freeze-related advantages from the Remembrance, enemies won't even have a chance to act before the team obliterates them with enhanced ultimate abilities and Herta spins.
4-Star Characters to Look Out For
Nevertheless, luck plays a vital role in the Simulated Universe, as it does in everything. Nonetheless, players can actively seek out the favorable blessings by selecting the appropriate Curios or, if necessary, resetting their Simulated Universe runs entirely. If all the necessary elements align perfectly, then the team can rely solely on March 7th to propel them to victory.
The game's roster of playable characters is constantly expanding with each major update, offering players the opportunity to discover new and formidable team combinations. As 4-star units are introduced, players will soon realize the potential for creating many new and powerful team compositions. As the roster continues to grow, players will be encouraged to tap into their creativity and explore diverse team formations.
Adding just one character to a team opens up numerous possibilities for team building. Instead of restricting players to specific compositions, we will now highlight the strengths of Honkai: Star Rail's latest 4-star characters, along with providing examples of team setups where they excel.
Yukong: Burst Damage and Offensive Buffs
Yukong, the revolutionary 4-star Imaginary support unit, is dedicated exclusively to offense. She prominently enhances ATK and CRIT attributes, as well as delivering formidable damage independently. Nonetheless, her Skill's ATK/CRIT boost relies on charges that deplete after each ally's turn, demanding astute SPD and turn control during her implementation.
Notable companions that synergize exceptionally well with Yukong are:
Dan Heng - Imbibitor Lunae
Seele
Jingliu
Luocha
Fu Xuan
Silver Wolf
Luka: Burst Damage, DoT, and Debuffs
Luka, a versatile Nihility character, excels in various forms of attack. He has the ability to inflict Bleeding, deliver powerful bursts of damage, and debuff enemies to amplify the damage they receive. Luka is a valuable addition to any team composition that requires a boost in DPS. While he may not output the same level of raw damage as specialized damage dealers, he truly thrives when paired with a team that can capitalize on his unique skills.
Some ideal teammates for Luka are:
Kafka
Sampo
Silver Wolf
Lynx: Healing, Cleansing, and Aggro Management
Lynx, the 4-star healer in the game, is widely considered to be the best option in Patch 1.5. With the ability to replenish the team's HP bars and eliminate one debuff from every member through her Ultimate, she excels at keeping the team alive. Additionally, Lynx holds a unique advantage when paired with Destruction characters. Using her Skill on a Destruction character increases the likelihood of monsters targeting the healed ally rather than the rest of the team. As a result, Lynx becomes an invaluable asset in high-damage teams that lack tank characters.
The best teammates for Lynx are:
Clara
Blade
Jingliu
Furthermore, it is important to note that Lynx, being a healer, seamlessly integrates into any team composition. This applies to all healers, unless players opt for characters capable of self-healing such as Fu Xuan and Physical Trailblazer.
Honkai: Star Rail is currently accessible on Android, iOS, and PC platforms. Additionally, a version for PlayStation is currently under development.
