In 1999, Infogrames introduced Slave Zero, a 3D action game filled with robots, weapons, and explosions. After a period of inactivity, Ziggurat Interactive has now acquired the intellectual property and is reintroducing it as Slave Zero X. This upcoming game serves as a prequel to the original, and is set to be released on February 21.
Slave Zero X follows the journey of Shou, who merges with a prototype combat robot to confront the ruthless dictator of Megacity S1-9. Unlike its predecessor which emphasized 3D action, the new installment will adopt a side-scrolling, 2.5D hack-and-slash approach. Players will experience continuous movement, evasion, and execute intricate sword and projectile combinations.
In addition to the main campaign mode, the game will include a post-story mode known as Bloody Palace, providing players with tougher challenges. There will also be a comprehensive training mode that allows players to practice combos and attacks before taking on both the story mode and the Bloody Palace mode. The development of Slave Zero X involved a collaboration with indie developer Poppy Works, known for their previous titles Devil Engine and the 2021 dungeon-crawling RPG Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi. Ziggurat Interactive, the publisher, made waves in 2020 with their acquisition of the beloved franchise BloodRayne.
Slave Zero X launches February 21 on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC. A demo is available now on both Steam and Xbox Series X|S.
