Highlights
Broforce is a run & gun game filled with parodies of classic action heroes, offering new challenges, bosses, and Bros to play.
Players need to select their Bros strategically since the death of one Bros requires switching to another character with distinct skills.
Each character possesses exclusive abilities including the power to perplex enemies, invulnerability, the use of jetpacks, and the manipulation of time.
Broforce, developed by South Africa-based studio Free Lives, is a dynamic run & gun game filled with patriotism, satire, and homage to iconic action heroes. Initially created as a game jam demo in 2012, it was released for PC in 2015, followed by versions for the PS4 in 2016, the Switch in 2018, and the Xbox One on August 8th, 2023, coinciding with the "Broforce Forever" update.
The game offers an expanded experience, featuring additional levels, challenging obstacles, formidable bosses, and a wide selection of playable characters known as "Bros." Among the new Bros introduced are Seth Brondle, a unique fly-human hybrid mutant, Desperabro, a guitar-wielding hero, and Broffy, renowned for his vampire-slaying skills. However, players must choose their Bros wisely, as death is permanent in their mission to rescue hostages, eliminate enemies, and reach their destination. Subsequently, players are required to adopt a different Bro with distinct abilities upon the demise of a character. Hence, it is advisable to select the most skilled Bros for optimal gameplay.
8 Bro In Black
The Bro in Black effortlessly embodies the role of protector against extraterrestrial scum, while remaining stylish. His Noisy Cricket boasts an impressive 9-block range, inflicting 35+ damage point-blank and 29 at its farthest reach. Although it possesses significant recoil that causes the entire screen to tremble, this drawback is offset by its higher rate of fire, which can also be upgraded. Additionally, the Bro in Black's agility and ability to jump 4-5 squares make him a formidable opponent, especially when armed with his trusty knife.
Even those who are unfamiliar with the movie will undoubtedly remember the Bro in Black's special skill - the Neuralyzer. This remarkable device confuses enemies, compelling them to turn against each other. However, mastering this skill and effectively utilizing it can prove challenging, especially in conjunction with the Bro in Black's less than discreet primary weapon. For those seeking a character that combines intellect with firepower, the Bro in Black is an excellent choice.
7 The Brominator
Unlike his film counterpart, the Brominator is not able to refrain from killing people while swearing. This is especially true when he is armed with a minigun. It takes a mere half-second for the barrel to begin spinning, but once it does, a continuous stream of bullets is unleashed, reaching a range of 8 blocks. Each bullet inflicts 4-8 points of damage, which can quickly accumulate as enemies are targeted with headshots and their bodies explode.
The recoil from the minigun will push the Brominator backward, but if he sheds his outer layer to reveal his Endoskeleton, he will be able to manage it more effectively. Moreover, he becomes impervious to all damage (excluding pitfalls), and his minigun no longer requires spin-up time. Unfortunately, this enhanced state only lasts for 5.5 seconds before he returns to his original appearance, so players must use it judiciously, particularly because he is one of the slower characters within the game. However, with practice, players will have a formidable walking tank that will relentlessly pursue enemies until they are all eliminated.
6 The Brocketeer
Broforce emanates a distinctly 1980s atmosphere through its extensive arsenal, the presence of rather generic adversaries, and the majority of the Bros' headquarters. However, the Bros do pay homage to other eras as well. Take, for instance, the Brocketeer, who draws inspiration from the 1991 Disney film The Rocketeer, itself based on a 1982 comic book that paid tribute to 1940s serials. True to its name, the Brocketeer's defining feature is his jetpack.
Every time he leaps, he can ignite foes or flammable objects surrounding him with a burst of fire. By holding the jump button, he can reach even greater heights and hover momentarily, granting players the opportunity to strategize their precise aiming for the formidable Brocket Dive attack. Though he possesses a Luger handgun for dispatching enemies, relying solely on it would be a mistake. To fully excel, players must master the utilization of his jetpack, allowing them to soar through levels with unrivaled finesse.
5 Indiana Brones
If players desire a character who pays homage to both old cinema serials and skilled marksmen, they need look no further than Dr. Brones. With his Revolver, boasting a capacity of 6 shots, players can enjoy a remarkable 17-block range, the ability to pierce rows of enemies, and inflict 15–35 points of damage depending on distance. Notably, this firearm can even be wielded while scaling walls. Furthermore, Dr. Brones exhibits great proficiency with his pickaxe in close-quarters combat.
Nevertheless, his true savior lies in his Whip. Though its damage may appear underwhelming on paper, its practical application reveals its potential to induce fear in formidable adversaries, such as the Bruisers, causing them to flee before delivering a strike. The Whip's versatile nature is further enhanced by its ability to latch onto terrain. With careful strategizing and quick thinking, players can navigate their way to the end goal, bypassing the need for direct confrontation.
4 The Boondock Bros
The Boondock Bros have a significant advantage in numbers. When they work together, they can shoot rapidly with their pistols, which have a range of 12 blocks and can headshot enemies. Their Pistol Whip is efficient when engaging in close combat. Additionally, they each have the ability to withstand two shots, as being hit once will result in the death of one Bro, leaving the surviving Brother in an enraged state and increasing their firing speed.
Moreover, players have the option to utilize their Backup skill to either revive a fallen Bro or introduce a third member, Bro Duce. Bro Duce automatically attacks any enemy who comes too close and enhances the firepower with his dual pistols. In the event of a Boondock Bro's demise, Bro Duce will also enter an enraged state, or if Bro Duce is killed, both Boondock Bros will become enraged. This presents enemies with a double onslaught of gunfire to contend with.
3 Mr. Anderbro
What can make the Boondocks' bullets even better? Mr. Anderbro has the solution - eliminating the need for bullets altogether. With his Bullet Shield, he has the ability to repel any projectile fired by the enemy back towards them. This proves incredibly useful when faced with enemies wielding machine guns. However, it's important to note that the shield cannot deflect lasers, falling objects, explosions, shockwaves, or enemies charging towards him.
In these situations, Mr. Anderbro relies on his physical strength to push them away or utilizes his Blink ability to swiftly dash through them. This ability can inflict 35 points of damage with splash damage, and can even cause an explosion if he Blink into surfaces. Additionally, Mr. Anderbro can use Blink to dash in midair, with the restriction of only being able to use it once per direction without needing to land. This grants him the incredible agility of Indiana Brones, while also possessing more stopping power.
2 Tank Bro
In the universe of Broforce, the term "Bro" is used to refer to individuals of any gender. The female characters, including the Brode (inspired by Kill Bill's Bride), Cherry Broling (based on Cherry Darling from Planet Terror/Grindhouse), and Ellen Ripbro (a nod to Ellen Ripley from the Alien movies), are all highly capable Bros. Among them, Tank Bro reigns supreme as the most powerful female character. Tank Bro, modeled after Tank Girl, possesses a bazooka that delivers devastating blows within a range of 7 blocks, inflicting over 30 points of damage.
Her bazooka not only aids in long-range attacks, but also proves advantageous for close combat and mobility through rocket jumps. Most notably, Tank Bro has the ability to summon a tank, which immediately crushes enemies upon arrival, plowing through obstacles, and enduring significant damage. If Tank Bro happens to perish, the next Bro in line can take control of the tank and continue the merciless assault. However, it is important to be wary of smaller foes such as Headcrabs, who are agile enough to evade the gun's range.
1 Time Bro
When it comes to the most broken Bro in Broforce, it's difficult to surpass Time Bro. Based on Jean-Claude Van Damme's character in the cheesy action classic Timecop, Time Bro possesses the formidable Broretta, a standard gun with a range of 9 blocks, as well as a diverse array of Kick-jutsu melee techniques.
When combined with his Time Slow ability, these seemingly ordinary moves become deadly. Time Bro can manipulate time for a duration of 8 seconds, causing everyone and everything, except himself, to move at a significantly slower pace. This gives him the advantage to swiftly eliminate enemies, both low-level and boss characters, before they even have a chance to retaliate. While the player can only activate this ability twice per level, it is more than sufficient to overcome even the most challenging stages.
Broforce is currently available on PC, macOS, Linux, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch.
