In Starfield, the expansive universe is teeming with valuable items, but players' pockets are not equipped to carry them all. Thankfully, ships provide a larger storage capacity for various items, although this capacity is not limitless.
In Starfield, hauling and storing loot is now more streamlined compared to Bethesda's previous games because ships are equipped with functional cargo containers. When these containers reach their maximum capacity, players have the option to upgrade to larger ones, giving them even more space to store the valuable resources and trinkets they discover during their space travel. Here's how to accomplish that.
How to Increase Ship Carrying Capacity in Starfield
In Starfield, all ships have the potential to increase their cargo capacities by either adding more cargo modules or upgrading existing ones. To make these modifications, simply consult a ship technician at any spaceport and request a ship modification. This will direct players to the ship customization screen, where they can make the desired changes. Ship technicians can typically be found near Trade Authority kiosks.
Once on the customization screen, access building mode by selecting the corresponding button located at the bottom of the screen. In this mode, players have the freedom to attach various parts to any available nodes on the ship (indicated by white, circular snap points). Referencing the controls list, players will find the "Add" function. To select this function (on a keyboard, the default binding is "G"), open the list of available parts.
In the parts menu, players can find a specialized cargo list that showcases a variety of cargo containers for their ships. These containers differ in terms of weight, storage capacity, and price. In order to maximize their cargo-holding capabilities, players can opt for the largest container available. However, it's important to note that this choice might compromise the ship's overall maneuverability.
If a ship has excessive mass, players may need to install additional engines and landing gears. Stronger ship parts are unlocked with B and C rank piloting certifications, providing opportunities for more efficient and spacious builds.
While most cargo containers can only be attached to the ship's sides, there are a few options for attaching them to the underbelly. To smuggle contraband into faction-controlled space, players must acquire and install shielded cargo containers instead of standard ones.
Starfield is available now on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
