Crash Team Rumble, the recently released online multiplayer game featuring Crash Bandicoot and his supporting characters, has not received a warm reception on Twitch. Once a pioneering franchise, Crash Bandicoot gained popularity during the original PlayStation era and has seen a resurgence in recent years. The previous installment, Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, was well-received for its colorful and challenging gameplay. Following this, Crash Bandicoot: On the Run, an endless runner mobile game developed by Candy Crush Saga studio King, was released.
After months of speculation, a third game in the series, Crash Team Rumble, was announced during The Game Awards 2022. The game is an online multiplayer where players engage in 4v4 battles across tropical landscapes to collect Wumpa Fruit. Reviews for Crash Team Rumble have been mixed, with criticism directed towards the game's monetization and praise for its smooth controls.
Twitch users may have a significantly more negative perception, as Crash Team Rumble is currently not performing well in terms of livestream views. According to a report by VideoGamer, Crash Team Rumble's viewer count on Twitch has plummeted to less than 30 viewers. To put this into perspective, other recently released multiplayer games such as Street Fighter 6 have garnered 19k viewers, BattleBit Remastered has attracted 14k spectators, and F1 23 has achieved a viewership of 3.5k.
Releasing Crash Team Rumble alongside other blockbuster multiplayer games may have contributed to its underwhelming Twitch performance. Additionally, the lack of promotion by Activision for the game has surprised fans on social media, who were unaware of its release. Despite these challenges, there is still an opportunity for Crash Team Rumble to gain popularity on Twitch. The developer, Toys for Bob, has already hinted at the introduction of new playable characters and improvements in the future. However, the competition in the gaming industry for the rest of 2023 is intense, and the lower-than-average viewership numbers on Twitch do not bode well for the game's success in the highly competitive online multiplayer battle royale genre.
Crash Team Rumble is out now for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
