Martin Scorsese's highly anticipated film, Killers of the Flower Moon, has generated excitement among audiences ever since its announcement in 2019. However, reports suggest that the inclusion of intermissions in the movie may not be necessary.
Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, and Robert De Niro star in this film that delves into the investigation of brutal killings in the Osage Nation.
While the director's movies are notorious for their lengthy duration, this is the first time that there is no designated intermission, posing potential challenges for theaters.
Intermissions violated Killers of the Flower Moon contract
According to Variety, several theaters in the U.K., Germany, Italy, Portugal, Brazil, and the States have put an intermission within Killers of the Flower Moon.
The UCI theaters specifically had a six-minute break in the middle of the film, whereas other theaters had intermissions of up to 15 minutes.
These intermissions were authorized by Scorsese, AppleTV+, or Paramount, prompting the studios to contact the theaters and inform them about their contract infringements.
The film's editor, Thelma Schoonmaker, expressed dissatisfaction with the situation, stating, "It is not right to run the film with an intermission. This is a violation and I need to investigate it."
Scorsese has yet to comment on the intermission controversy, but he did address complaints about the lengthy runtime before the film's premiere. He stated, "People may argue that it's a three-hour movie, but let's be honest, we can easily spend five hours sitting in front of the TV."
