Steven Yeun, known for portraying Glenn in The Walking Dead and recent superhero debut as Invincible, is set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for the Thunderbolts movie. Invincible creator Robert Kirkman has revealed Yeun's character in the highly-anticipated film.
Earlier this year, news broke that Yeun was slated to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Thunderbolts, a concept similar to Suicide Squad in the franchise. Speculation was rampant regarding the exact character he would portray.
Remaining tight-lipped about the details, the actor referred to the role as "interesting," to avoid displeasing Kevin Feige and the Marvel team. However, the secret has now been revealed, thanks to Kirkman.
Robert Kirkman reveals Steven Yeun is Sentry in Thunderbolts
Kirkman confirmed that Yeun will play Sentry in Thunderbolts in a recent interview with David Finch.
In conversation with the artist while he created a sketch of Omni-Man, he revealed, "My close friend, Steven Yeun, has been cast as the Sentry in a film. He reached out to me after attending a costume fitting."
He suddenly realized that what he had just said could potentially spoil something, but he didn't feel concerned about it. "I don't think this is something that would spoil or get anyone in trouble... I mean, I don't know, maybe. Let's see. I don't work for Marvel, so what can they do to me?" he playfully added. Yeun humorously mentioned to Kirkman during their phone conversation that Sentry's costume is similar to Invincible's current suit, with its yellow and blue colors.
Sentry, unlike other Marvel characters, can be compared to Superman in that he possesses incredible abilities such as superhuman strength, agility, durability, speed, senses, "molecularkinesis," and flight. However, what sets him apart is that he obtained these powers from the same Super Soldier Serum as Captain America, but with a potency increased by 100,000. In the comics, he has the ability to harness the power of a million exploding suns.
Rumors suggest that Sentry will be the antagonist that compels the Thunderbolts to collaborate in the movie, although specific plot details remain unverified. During a previous roundtable interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Yeun shared the story of how he was cast. "It all fell into place in an unusual manner. Jake Schreier, who directed episodes of Beef, landed the directing job and saw potential in me for this part. I read the role and found it genuinely intriguing. I was eager to delve into it," he explained.
Instead of simply ticking items off a bucket list, I believe the focus should be on seeking meaningful experiences. It's about asking myself, "Do I truly want to immerse myself in that experience?" Although the aftermath of putting myself out there may require preparation, I am currently open to fully embracing and enjoying the experience itself.
