A player's unfortunate attempt to obtain DLC armor in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was abruptly cut short when Geralt met a comical demise after using a portal. The incident was captured on video and quickly spread on social media. This comes just months after another viral clip showed a player's devastating defeat during the Dettlaff boss fight.
Caution! Minor spoilers for The Witcher 3 side quest ahead. Despite Geralt's well-known aversion to portals, most fans of CD Projekt Red's popular 2015 RPG do not share his animosity towards these magical gateways. However, there is one portal mechanism in the old signal tower south of Kaer Morhen that has gained a reputation. It guards the diagram for a beloved armor set and presents an environmental puzzle where players must activate two magical crystals using Aard. If the prerequisite is not met, attempting to use the portal will result in Geralt falling to his demise off a cliff.
However, even if you solve the puzzle correctly, it doesn't necessarily mean success, as Reddit user Rustytip recently discovered. Rustytip shared a gameplay clip where Geralt successfully stabilized the gateway mechanism but ended up hilariously dying when he used the portal. Although the footage doesn't show both crystals being activated, the fact that the portal stops flickering when the nearby gem is hit suggests that the other one was already powered. Despite this, Rustytip's Geralt still met a fatal end, leading the player to understand Geralt's disdain for portals.
This is not the first bug encountered by players searching for The Witcher 3 Wolf School gear, which was initially released as free DLC in June 2015. Online reports indicate that installing the DLC after starting the game can cause a glitched chest that prevents players from accessing the armor diagram and progressing in the quest. Furthermore, this action can also prevent the second crystal from appearing near the lookout tower's ledge. Some players have also reported that the first gem sometimes does not respond to Aard.
The problem supposedly impacts all non-GOTY editions of the game that are not pre-packaged with the DLC. Despite ongoing updates and hotfixes from CDPR for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, this specific glitch has yet to be addressed by the developer.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt can be found on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
