Summary
The mentor-pupil relationships in Cobra Kai have been crucial to the storylines, and there is still room for compelling pairings in season 6.
Characters such as Tory and Chozen, Anthony and Johnny, and Robby and Eli possess the potential to foster captivating teacher-student connections that could enhance their fighting techniques and character progressions.
Sam stands to gain from receiving training in Eagle Fang karate under John Kreese, disregarding the existing animosity between Kreese and Daniel. This could ultimately pave the way for Kreese's redemption in the concluding season.
Cobra Kai has explored a variety of captivating teacher-student partnerships during its initial five seasons. However, there is still room for a few more in season 6. From the show's inception, character pairings have been a central focus. Some of these pairings showcased romantic relationships, like Miguel and Sam, while others highlighted intense rivalries, such as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence. Additionally, Cobra Kai has dedicated attention to the significant sensei-student dynamics between both legacy and new-generation characters.
These particular pairings are of utmost importance to the franchise, as they mirror the pivotal teacher-student connection between Mr. Miyagi and Daniel LaRusso in the Karate Kid films. Likewise, in Cobra Kai, the mentor-pupil relationship between Johnny and Miguel has been the catalyst for subsequent storylines. Despite already exploring numerous captivating teacher-student pairings in the first five seasons, there is still an opportunity to introduce a few more in the final season. With that in mind, here is a list of potential compelling pairings that Cobra Kai season 6 should consider exploring.
8 Tory & Chozen
7 Anthony & Johnny
After the events of Cobra Kai season 5, it would be logical for Tory to become a member of Miyagi Do and learn the peaceful principles of Mr. Miyagi's defensive karate style. However, due to Tory's tumultuous history with Sam LaRusso, she may struggle to train under Daniel LaRusso. Moreover, since she has been practicing Cobra Kai karate since the beginning of her journey in the series, adapting to Daniel LaRusso's fighting style may require a complete shift in her understanding of combat. Therefore, Chozen would serve as the ideal mentor for her. Not only does he have no prior connections with Tory, but he also embraces a more aggressive Miyagi Do style, which would complement her existing karate expertise.
While Daniel LaRusso was known for his accomplishments, Cobra Kai reveals that he neglected his son, Anthony, leaving him to navigate life on his own. As a result, Anthony remains unnoticed in the earlier seasons, until he becomes a catalyst for Kenny's transformation into a bully. In the fifth season of Cobra Kai, Anthony finally delves into Miyagi Do karate, discovering the importance of standing up for something greater than himself. However, in order to climb the ranks of the Cobra Kai Tier List and confront bullies like Kenny, Anthony must embrace some offensive fighting tactics rooted in the Cobra Kai philosophy. With toxic figures such as Kreese and Silver as other Cobra Kai senseis, Johnny would be the ideal mentor for him.
6 Chozen & Robby
Robby embarked on his Cobra Kai journey by studying Mr. Miyagi's fighting style and philosophies through Daniel LaRusso. He subsequently became a member of Cobra Kai and received training from John Kreese and Terry Silver. As the fifth season of Cobra Kai unfolded, Robby had the opportunity to further his karate knowledge from his father. Being the sole Cobra Kai character to have learned karate from multiple senseis, it can be argued that he possesses the most well-rounded fighting abilities among the show's characters.
Despite possessing an impressive hybrid karate technique, Robby has yet to achieve his full potential due to his recurring anger issues. In Cobra Kai season 5, he took a significant step towards inner peace by forgiving his father, Johnny. However, in order to fully evolve as a fighter, he must also embrace the spiritual aspects of Miyagi Do karate and integrate them into his combat style to prevent being overwhelmed by his emotions.
5 Eli & Kenny
Eli exceeds the mental maturity of most new-generation characters in Cobra Kai. His transformation from being bullied to becoming a bully proved him to be a formidable adversary in the early seasons. However, when he switched sides in season 3 and joined forces with Demitri during the climactic showdown, it became evident that he never truly belonged in the Cobra Kai dojo. He was simply misguided and consumed by the empowering philosophies of the dojo.
Even in season 5, Eli displayed maturity by not dwelling on his defeat against Kenny and acknowledging that winning and losing are inherent in competitive sports. Kenny appears to be following a similar path as Eli, the only difference being his lack of self-awareness regarding the destructive nature of Cobra Kai's beliefs. With Eli's guidance, Kenny can find the right balance between strength and honor, allowing him to mature mentally, forgive his bullies, and move forward.
4 Sensei Kim & Kyler Park
Kyler Park's role in Cobra Kai has primarily been to showcase the physical abilities of other characters, essentially serving as a pawn. Despite his strong sports background, Park rarely emerges victorious in any fights throughout the series. Given his one-dimensional character development, it wouldn't make sense for Cobra Kai to redeem him in the upcoming sixth season. However, the show can still transform him into a formidable villain by emphasizing how Sensei Kim pushes him to surpass his limits and unleash his full potential in the Sekai Taikai International Tournament of Cobra Kai season 6.
3 John Kreese & Sam
In Cobra Kai season 4, Sam ventured beyond the boundaries of the Miyagi Do dojo and embraced the world of Eagle Fang karate. Her rapid grasp of Johnny Lawrence's aggressive karate style showcased her natural aptitude for Eagle Fang, despite her lifelong training in Miyagi Do karate under her father. By joining Cobra Kai in season 6, Sam has the opportunity to further refine her karate skills under the guidance of John Kreese. The existing animosity between Kreese and Daniel may make this mentor-student pairing seem improbable, but if it were to occur, it could serve as Kreese's path to redemption in the final season.
2 Daniel & Tory
Chozen's intense Miyagi Do style may align well with Tory's Cobra Kai karate skills, but Daniel's proven teaching methods will seamlessly ease her into the new karate dojo. Considering Tory's limited preparation time for the Sekai Taikai in Cobra Kai season 6, she can seek guidance from both Daniel and Chozen. While Chozen can assist her in refining her existing karate skills and philosophies, Daniel can help her establish a solid defense foundation with Mr. Miyagi's iconic "Wax on, Wax off" techniques.
1 Miguel & Robby
After a long-standing rivalry, Miguel and Robby have now joined forces in Cobra Kai. As former leaders of their dojos, they can exchange their knowledge and improve their skills together in Cobra Kai season 6. Robby's expertise can enhance Miguel's versatility as a fighter, while Miguel can teach Robby how to remain calm and collected during intense battles.
