Alma Pöysti expressed her gratitude for the global support her film, Fallen Leaves, has received. "It was a tremendous honor," the 42-year-old shared exclusively with We while walking the red carpet on Sunday, January 7, about her Golden Globes nomination. "To know that our modest Finnish love story resonates with people all over the world is truly humbling."
The Finnish-German romantic comedy-drama Fallen Leaves, starring Pöysti and Jussi Vatanen and directed by Aki Kaurismäki, tells the story of Ansa and Holappa, two lonely workers at a grocery store in Helsinki who decide to pursue a relationship after connecting during a shift.
While filming, Pöysti had a feeling that Fallen Leaves was something special, but she didn't anticipate the international acclaim the movie would receive.
"I didn't expect these adventures to come, but the film feels like a crucial story that provides comfort during these challenging times we're facing." Pöysti emphasizes the need for more "compassionate" and "caring" movies, citing her enjoyment of the recent Barbie film, which she watched twice.

Pöysti was nominated for the Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category at the 81st Golden Globes. Her fellow nominees included Margot Robbie for Barbie, Emma Stone for Poor Things, Jennifer Lawrence for No Hard Feelings, and Fantasia Barrino for The Color Purple. It was ultimately Stone, 35, who took home the award.
Before the award show, Pöysti discussed the impact of Hollywood recognition on her career. In an interview with Finnish outlet Yle published on Sunday, she explained, "If great scripts and interesting people come along, then so be it. But not a career. It's going in the wrong direction. You have to focus on the essentials, the story."
Fallen Leaves was nominated for Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language, but ultimately lost to Anatomy of a Fall. Despite missing out on a Golden Globe, the film did receive recognition from the National Society of Film Critics on January 6, when it was named the best non-English language film of 2023.
