19-year-old Kit Connor altered his exercise regimen prior to reprising his role as Nick in season 2 of Netflix's Heartstopper, influenced by the show's dedicated fanbase. In an interview with Vulture published on Tuesday, July 17, Connor recollected how his physique was compared to the depiction of Nick Nelson in the original graphic novel, causing him to grapple with self-acceptance and a sense of inadequacy in embodying the character. "Although I wasn't necessarily coerced by fans, it was a personal decision for me as a young adult, attempting to come to terms with my own body and feeling somewhat unprepared to portray the role," Connor remarked, acknowledging the flawed mindset while acknowledging his teenage status, which persists to this day.
Joining the TV adaptation of Alice Oseman's Heartstopper book series propelled the actor to stardom. In the series, Connor portrays a high school athlete who begins to explore his sexuality upon forming a friendship with fellow student Charlie (Joe Locke).
Following Heartstopper's explosive popularity on social media, Connor became the subject of fan obsession, particularly concerning his dating life. In October 2022, he responded to allegations of queer baiting, which arose when he was seen spending time with his co-star from A Cuban Girl's Guide to Tea and Tomorrow, Maia Reficco.
"Going back for a moment. I want to clarify, I identify as bisexual. Congratulations on pressuring an 18-year-old to reveal his sexual orientation. It seems like some of you may have misunderstood the purpose of the show. Goodbye," tweeted Connor at that time.
In recent weeks, Connor has shared his thoughts on the pressure he experienced to publicly disclose his sexual identity.

"I just felt that I wasn't ready to discuss it. I wasn't angry, just a little disappointed by the reaction," he shared with British Vogue on July 4. "There was this notion that because I had been in the industry for some time, people assumed I could handle it. I wouldn't say I was forced, but I would have preferred a different approach. I can't say for certain if I would have ever done it differently. Nevertheless, I have no regrets. It was truly empowering."
Connor also opened up about accepting his sexual orientation prior to his involvement with Heartstopper, stating, "It was a very organic process for me. There wasn't a moment where everything suddenly clicked. It just became more evident as time went on."
The star of Rocketman revealed that he faced difficulty fitting in because of societal stereotypes surrounding bisexuality. He admitted to feeling torn between being perceived as too straight to be gay and too gay to be straight. However, he shared that he now feels more confident in his own identity.
