Netflix has unveiled the trailer and release date for Stamped From the Beginning, a documentary that delves into the roots of racist ideology in North America and its evolution over time. The film, directed by Roger Ross Williams, is set to premiere on November 20, just under a month from now. Williams, who recently directed Prime Video's Cassandro, has adapted the project from the best-selling book Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America, written by Ibram X. Kendi. In an interview with Netflix, Williams emphasized that Stamped From the Beginning is not solely a film for the Black community, but rather a powerful exploration of power dynamics and how they have been used to the detriment of Black Americans. He expressed his hope that the movie will inspire viewers to actively engage in antiracist action.
‘Stamped From the Beginning’ Brings Black Female Philosophers Front and Center
Stamped From The Beginning promises a visually captivating experience with its unique blend of live-action, animation, and interview styles. Through these diverse storytelling techniques, the film sheds light on forgotten narratives, often untold, that vividly depict how the United States, as a nation, has long neglected its Black history. It is high time we address this historical injustice and reclaim the truth.

Notably, Williams observed that as he delved deeper into his research, he found himself repeatedly drawn to influential figures in the Black community such as Dr. Angela Davis, Honorée Fanonne Jeffers, Brittany Packnett Cunningham, and Dr. Jennifer L. Morgan. Recognizing the significance of this, he made it a priority for Stamped From The Beginning to incorporate these voices.
When we began researching historians and scholars, we compiled a lengthy list. A notable observation was the prevalence of Black women engaging in the study of racism in America. During pre-interviews, I posed a question: "What motivates you to do this work?" Surprisingly, many responded in unison - they felt compelled to tackle this subject matter due to their personal experiences and the impossibility of escaping racism in America. It became clear that if they were to devote their lives to a cause, it would be addressing and comprehending racism in America. With conviction, I declared that only Black women would be featured in the film. This decision held significant importance.
