Despite facing fierce competition from Sega Genesis in the 90s, SNES managed to sell a remarkable 49 million units worldwide by 1998. The Redditor who stumbled upon the SNES games and console received an impressive 1.1k upvotes on Reddit and intends to experience them on the authentic hardware.
A gamer recently came across their childhood Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) console and game collection while unpacking. They decided to share their collection on social media, receiving compliments for maintaining their SNES collection and preserving most of the games in decent condition. Although time had affected some of the cartridges, the retro gamer's dedication was evident.
Originally launched in Japan in late 1990, the SNES was Nintendo's second home console to be released globally. Nintendo aimed to build on the success of the NES when they brought the SNES to North America in the summer of 1991. However, the SNES faced tough competition from the Sega Genesis and its popular Sonic the Hedgehog series throughout the 1990s. Despite this, the SNES managed to sell an impressive 49 million units before production ceased in 1998. This rediscovery by one gamer highlights the timeless appeal and unique experiences that the SNES provided, which cannot be easily replicated.
On Reddit, a user named JadeHellbringer recently discovered their SNES and 20 game cartridges in a box after a long-distance move of 1,800 miles. An image of their collection was shared on the Gaming subreddit. The box contained a refurbished SNES, their original console, which they managed to put back together using training and salvageable parts from another non-functional SNES. The 20 game cartridges were neatly organized in alphabetical order, with two copies of Super Mario World among them. Interestingly, one copy of Super Mario World was obtained from the broken console they used for spare parts, as it was one of the launch titles for the SNES. Additionally, the box contained a power cable, an RF adapter, and three controllers.
Notable games that the OP kept included the first two Donkey Kong Country games, Star Fox, and Street Fighter 2. However, JadeHellbringer mentioned that some rare SNES games like Super Metroid and F-Zero were still missing from their collection. Within a day, the OP received more than 1.1k upvotes on the Gaming subreddit, and fellow users expressed gratitude for sharing the nostalgic find. In the comments, JadeHellbringer mentioned that the box had been untouched since 2006 and revealed their plan to play these games on a CRT TV stored in their garage.
Gamers continue to relive their childhood memories on original hardware, despite the availability of certain SNES titles on the Nintendo Switch Online SNES app, such as Super Mario Kart. The future additions of SNES classics to the service are yet to be revealed.
